One Childhood, One Chance

Chilton pupils explore the history and mystery of ancient Egypt

Tombs, temples and treasures are being discovered by young explorers from Chilton Junior School in Ramsgate.

The Year 4 pupils’ voyage into the past is unearthing the mysteries of ancient Egypt as part of their latest learning topic.

Called ‘Walk Like An Egyptian’, it began with a non uniform day for children who wore beautifully-created home-made costumes to resemble the historic period including pharaohs, mummies, scribes, scholars, and servants.

They also explored mummification by experimenting on a tomato.

In the coming weeks they will learn about some of the key features of Ancient Egypt from pharaohs to pyramids, hieroglyphs to the Egyptian’s significant contribution to art and architecture.

They will also consider what impact this 10,000 year old civilisation has on our lives today by delving deep into its history, heritage and culture. This saw hunter gatherers evolve into food-providing farmers that in turn gave people time to develop reading and writing, painting, carving statues, looking at the stars in the night sky, worshipping gods, and inventing sums and numbers.

The topic will conclude with an exhibition for parents that will display artefacts made by Year 4 including fact files, models, masks and an instructional video how to mummify a dead body!

Deputy Head of School Hannah Cheshire said the topic is always a firm favourite with children. She said: “The themed costume day is a perfect way to start their learning journey into Ancient Egypt and all its mysteries and history. The outfits our children wore were cleverly created and looked splendid.”

Chilton Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Upton Junior School, Broadstairs, and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
