One Childhood, One Chance

Week ending 9th December

We have reached the end of the penultimate week of term 2! Thank you so much to all the adults who came to watch our nativity. Aside from the technical hitch, we think it went down a treat! The children were once again amazing with their beautiful singing voices and confidence in front of such a big audience. We have some stars in the making!

Phonics

We have continued our RWI sessions in small groups. Some groups are learning red words- you can’t fred a red! There are some tricky parts of red words which make it hard to sound out. We discuss the tricky part and practise saying the word.

We continue to practice set 1 sounds and some groups are beginning to write words with these sounds in. The trickier sounds are the set 1 special friends where children have to learn 2 letters which make 1 sound- ch, ng, nk, sh, th and qu. Lots of practice recognising these will help when we come to read words with these sounds in.

Maths

This week we have been learning about repeating patterns. We learnt that patterns have rules to follow… just like us! We had to become detectives to find the rule (the part of the pattern which repeats). This helped us later in the week when some of the patterns had mistakes and we had to fix them! At the end of the week, we made our own patterns. We had to think of the rule to then repeat it.

Topic

This was our last week of our Transport learning. We started by exploring emergency vehicles, their important jobs, and the people who use them. We then designed and made our own vehicles. We had to think about which resources we would use and explain why we had made these choices. In teams, we worked hard to create our vehicles, using our plans to help us. At the end of the week, the children had a quiz to show off all their learning, and we had a special visit from a fire engine!

PE

A reminder that children should come in to school on a Friday in their PE kits.

Children should come in to school on a Wednesday in their school uniform, but with trainers.

Junk modelling

If you have any junk modelling (boxes, egg cartons, yoghurt pots etc) at home, please send them in to school so we can use them. Thank you!

On Thursday 15th December, we will be having our Christmas Party! Please could you provide a small amount of the following:

  • Red Romans: savoury bits (e.g. sausage rolls)

  • Blue Vikings: sweet bits (e.g. cakes)

  • Yellow Saxons: crisps

  • Green Normans: drinks

Please bring these food items in on the day. The children are also allowed to come in in their party clothes on this day (sensible footwear please!)

Art Competition

For this Terms art competition, we are asking children to design ANYTHING in the style of Yayoi Kusama.  Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist who is sometimes called 'the princess of polka dots'. Although she makes lots of different types of art – paintings, sculptures, performances and installations – they have one thing in common, DOTS!

It is up to you what you design, how you design it or how you would like to present it!

Entries are due in by 9th January – Please pass these on to your class teachers. Enjoy!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us,

Many thanks,

The EYFS Team
