Chilton Primary School

One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 24th February

We have had a great start to Term 4 in Reception!

Just so that you are aware, at lunchtime play, the children in Reception will be allowed to play on the larger playground as well as having access to the Year R garden. This means that children will have the opportunity to use the climbing frame on the playground as well as being able to run around. The garden will now be a quiet area where children will be able to do more calm and quiet activities e.g. colouring.

World Book Day

World Book Day, for Chilton, will be next week on Friday 3rd March.  Children are encouraged to dress up as a character from their favourite book. But please do not feel the need to buy anything for this - please use anything you have at home! The children will take part in a number of activities throughout the day and they will have the opportunity to share their book / character with their class. World Book Day vouchers will be sent home on World Book Day.  These vouchers can be spent at the School Book Fair that will arrive on Wednesday 22nd March.

In Term 4, we continue to complete our RWI sessions in small groups each day. We will be continuing to learn Set 1 sounds. Some groups will be focusing on learning special friends. This is where 2 letters make 1 sound (e.g. sh, th, ch, ng).

Miss Gorham and Mrs Walker’s groups have started to learn Set 2 sounds:

ay – ay, may I play (play, stay, clay)

ee – what can you see (feet, see, seen)

igh – fly high (night, sight, tight)

ow – blow the snow (snow, blow, flow)

oo –poo at the zoo (zoom, soon, moon)

oo – look at the book (bool, shook, cook)

ar – start the car (car, far, star)

or – shut the door (fork, pork)

air – that’s not fair (fair, pair)

ir – whirl and twirl (shirt, skirt)

ou – shout it out (out, about)

oy – enjoy the toy (toy, boy, enjoy)

This week we have been learning to find 1 more and 1 less than a given number. We have been trying hard to say these in a full sentence (1 more than 6 is 7. 1 less than 5 is 4). We have been using lots of different resources and games to find 1 more and 1 less.

Next week we will be looking at numbers 6-10 and the composition of these numbers (i.e. knowing that 6 can be made of 2 and 4 and can also be made with 5 and 1).

This week we started our new topic: Space! We started this with a spaceship crash landing in our garden area! We have been learning about what we can see/find in space (e.g. stars, sun, asteroid, comet, meteor, planets). We learned what these are and leraned some fun facts. We acted out how the earth orbits the sun and how the moon orbits the earth. We also created some artwork based on what we might see/find in space.

Next week we will be learning about the 8 planets in the solar system.
