One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 22.02.24

Welcome back to Term 4 to you all. The children are now halfway through their time in Reception. This time has flown, but we are also very excited for the second half of the school year. The children have come back so positively this week and it has been a delight to see them enjoying their learning so much this week. They have been so enthused with our learning about space!

Thank you for supporting your child(ren) at home to complete their love to learn tasks over the holiday – these look amazing and we cannot wait to continue to share these with the class over this term.

World Book Day Thursday 7th March 2024

This year's World Book Day theme will be bedtime stories / reading for pleasure.  We invite children to share their favourite bedtime story book on this day and if they wish, come to school dressed in their bedtime clothing!  Children are invited to dress up as their favorite character from a book if they prefer another option.  We would like to remind families that there is no expectation for you to spend money on costumes.  An enjoyment of reading and sharing a story is our main aim for World Book Day this year.

The Chilton Masked Reader

This year, we will share Chilton Masked Reader videos for World Book Day.  These videos will be created by our talented members of staff who will read a story without reveling their faces.  We hope our Chilton families will enjoy the stories and guess who the masked readers are! Links to these videos will be available on all school Blogs.

Book Fayre

The Chilton Book Fayre will arrive on Monday 11th March and run until Friday 15th March outside the Year 5 classrooms. World Book Day book vouchers can we spent at the fayre. Cash and online payments are also available and a percentage of monies raised will go towards funding more books for Chilton children.

Phonics

This term we continue our Read, Write, Inc lessons in small groups. Each group will focus on the sounds and the skills suited to them. To support at home, you can continue to use the pink sounds books (which can now be kept at home) to make sure that they can speedily recall the sounds. Children can also use the space on the pages to practise writing the sounds. Please listen to your child read regularly at home. Books are changed on a Tuesday and a Friday in school. If your child has a lilac book (no words), please encourage your child to say what they can see on the page, can they make up their own story to match the pictures?

Maths

This week we have been learning to find one more and one less than a number. First of all we did this practically e.g. you have 4 apples, if you get one more, how many do you have now? We also learned to use a number line to find 1 more and 1 less than a given number. You could use practical resources around the room to help consolidate this learning.

Each week we will have a fact of the week. We will spend some time each day learning this fact so that by the end of the week we can recall this fact quickly.

Our fact of the week this week has been:

1 and 1 makes 2

The fact of the week next week is:

2 and 1 makes 3

1 and 2 makes 3

Next week we will be looking at the composition of numbers 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. This means that we look at how these numbers could be made e.g. 7 can be made by using 4 and 3 or 5 and 2. We will be using lots of practical resources to help the children learn about this.

Thematic Curriculum

In the afternoons this week we have started our learning about space! We started off by thinking about what we already know about space and what we would like to learn about it. We also had a space crash landing in the garden area! We have been learning about what can be found in space (asteroids, planets, comet, sun, star, moon) and created a piece of artwork to represent these things.

Next week we will be learning more about the planets.

Reminders

  • PE kits need to be worn in to school each Friday please.

  • Please ensure that children have a named water bottle which is already filled with water at the start of each day.

  • All clothing to be named please!

  • Please complete the WOW moment sheets regularly so that we can add these to the children’s learning journey books.
