One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 1.3.24

We have reached the end of term 2, and what an amazing week we have had. Children are super enthusiastic about our space learning, and have blown us away with their knowledge and their thirst to learn new facts.

Phonics

Groups are continuing to learn set 2 sounds and reviewing set 1 sounds. Different groups will be learning different skills from oral blending (this is where we say a word in sounds eg c-a-t for the children to hear and blend the word cat). This is an important skill children need before reading simple words themselves. Other children are learning to read CVC words, using their fred talk to speedily say the sounds to then blend to a word. Other groups are working on reading sentences including red words (we can’t fred a red.) We really appreciate all your support with reading at home.

Maths

This week we have been learning about the composition of numbers 6-10. This means we can recall the parts which make up a whole number eg 1 and 5 make 6, but also 2 and 4 and 3 and 3 also make 6. We explored this through a range of activities including hulk smashing cubes into 2 groups and pushing numicon into playdough and pushing some of the buttons down to show 2 parts.

Our fact of the week this week has been:

1 and 2 makes 3

The fact of the week next week is:

1 and 3 makes 4

Next week we will start to look at addition through number stories and combining 2 groups.

Thematic Curriculum

This week children have enjoyed learning facts about the planets in our solar system. We thought of our own species of aliens (cornflower aliens were the Ubla Tublas!). The Ubla Tublas went on a journey through space, hearing about the planets they pass including the planet furthest from the sun, an icy giant….. Neptune!

Using these facts, children wrote simple words/ phrases and sentences.

In music we listened to Gustav Holst the Planets. Mr Redwood taught us how the planets are named after Greek gods and this influenced each piece of music. For example, Mars the God of war was a loud, fast paced piece of music which made us want to march. We used the drums to help us express ourselves whilst listening. Following our music lesson, we expressed ourselves in different ways whilst listening to the Planets. We used pens and pencils, ribbons and our bodies to move to the music and show how the music made us feel.

We discussed the sizes of the planets in comparison to each other, and created a piece of art to represent the solar system, the planet sizes and their appearance.

Next week we will be learning about the moon landing.
