One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 15.03.2024

We have had a thoroughly wonderful week in Reception this week. This week has seen us complete our learning about Space. This topic has really captured the children’s imaginations and curiosity. It has been wonderful seeing them using what we have been learning in lessons in their Power Play!

Phonics

We have been continuing our Read, Write, Inc lessons in small groups. Each group will focus on the sounds and the skills suited to them. To support at home, you can continue to use the pink sounds books (which can now be kept at home) to make sure that they can speedily recall the sounds. Children can also use the space on the pages to practise writing the sounds. Please listen to your child read regularly at home. Books are changed on a Tuesday and a Friday in school. If your child has a lilac book (no words), please encourage your child to say what they can see on the page, can they make up their own story to match the pictures?

Maths

This week we have been learning to identify the similarities in 2D shapes. We have been looking at different 2D shapes and saying how they are similar (e.g. same number of sides/corners). We have made shapes using geoboards to also describe how shapes are similar. At the end of the week, we have been learning the names of 3D shapes (cube, cuboid, cone, sphere, pyramid). If you have any objects around the house that are these shapes, you could ask your child what shape it is.

Each week we will have a fact of the week. We will spend some time each day learning this fact so that by the end of the week we can recall this fact quickly.

Our fact of the week this week has been:

4 and 1 makes 5 (4+1=5)

1 and 4 makes 5 (1+4=5)

Science Day

On Monday, the whole school celebrated Science Day. The theme this year was TIME. We spent some time discussing what a scientist is and then looked at the phases of the moon.

Thematic Curriculum

As mentioned above, this week saw us complete our Space learning. This week we looked at the parts of a rocket, designed a rocket and then made one in a small group. We learned about different ways we could join the parts together on our model. Towards the end of the week, we learned about gravity and made simple rockets and used straws to show what gravity is. This was lots of fun! To complete our learning, we had a visit from Year 5 pupils who have also recently completed their Space learning, it was great to see the older children asking the Reception children what they had learned and them being so confident to answer!

Reminders

  • PE kits need to be worn in to school each Friday please.

  • Please ensure that children have a named water bottle which is already filled with water at the start of each day.

  • All clothing to be named please!

  • Please complete the WOW moment sheets regularly so that we can add these to the children’s learning journey books.
