One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! w/b 26.9.22

This week was Art Week and we had a great time getting messy with different materials! Take a look…

Read, Write Inc

This week continued our Read, Write Inc. lessons. Our blending is really improving and some children are starting to read multisyllabic words and show good understanding when adding suffixes!

In each reading folder, there is a sound card and list of red words. Any practise with these at home would be extremely helpful and support your child’s reading and writing at home. Some children have already learned the first row – well done you!

Maths

All of our learning in maths this week has been around addition. We used our number bonds to help us investigate all possible sets of two numbers to make a given number. We started by using a tens frame, then we used cubes to build stacks, then broke them in two and counted how many cubes were in each part before progressing onto putting our cubes in part, part, whole models. This showed us that there are many ways we can make a number, for example 1+5=6, 2+4=6, and 3+3=6! Take a look at some of our calculations:

Topic

We have loved art week this week! We learnt about an artist from the past, Kandinsky, and an artist who is alive today, Frank Bowling. Both artists make abstract art, so we discussed what this was and spotted similarities and differences in their styles. We liked all the shapes that appear in Kandinsky’s paintings and all the straight and wiggly lines. We learned that Frank Bowling won a silver medal at the Royal Academy of Art and thought that was a great achievement, especially as in the past Black people wouldn’t even have been allowed to go to art school.

The best bit was definitely getting to make art like the artists! It was especially fun painting like Frank Bowling as he has a very interesting and immersive process. His paintings are massive! First, he washes the background with a colour, then he pours lots of different things like sand and glitter and found objects on top, before tipping the painting side to side to create dribbles. Look at some of the masterpieces we made:

Next week we will be continuing to work hard on our sounds, reading and writing in our Read, Write Inc lessons.

In Maths, we will be moving onto subtraction, and we will do this by breaking up numbers and using our number bonds.

In Topic, we will be focussing on Geography. We will be learning about our hometown and where it is on a map of the UK. After that we will write a letter and use a map to follow direction to go and post it!

Love to Learn:

This week we would love for you to create a map of your house or garden!

This can be recorded in any way you wish.
