Chilton Primary School

One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 23rd June 2023

We are almost halfway through the final term! The children have had another great week in Year 1!

Read, Write Inc

Each week we will be focusing on a different text as a whole class just before lunchtime. Each Friday we will be doing some creative writing based on that text. This week, we have been reading Beegu and on Friday we wrote a diary entry. We tried hard to use conjunctions (because, but, and, so) in our writing.

The children have been continuing to work hard in their RWI sessions this week. When reading we have been encouraging children to spot the special friend in the word before sounding it out (Fred talking). For example in the word play, they would spot the ‘ay’ first, then Fred talk (p-l-ay) and then say the word (play).

In RWI, children read the same story several times. This is important as it helps children to become familiar with the story and the words and help to improve their fluency when reading. This is something we would encourage when reading at home too. This will really help with their confidence when reading and can also make answering questions about what they have read easier too.

In each reading folder, there is a sound card and list of red words. Any practise with these at home would be extremely helpful and support your child’s reading and writing at home.

Maths

This week we have been continuing our learning on multiplication. We continued to understand multiplication as repeated addition and wrote calculations to match pictures (e.g. 3 + 3 + 3 = 9). We then wrote the multiplication calculation to match the picture (e.g. 3x3 = 9). We have been amazing at this!

Next week, we will be using our maths lessons to explore ‘money sense’ which ties in with our PSHE learning. We will be learning about where money comes from, how people earn money and the difference between what we ‘need’ and what we ‘want’.

Thematic Curriculum

This week has been all about our senses! We have learned about what our senses are and the part of the body associated with the senses. We labelled body parts and took part in some different senses experiments where we had to describe different objects using our senses!

Love to Learn:

In preparation for next week, you could start to think about the things you have at home that you have that are needed (clothes, shelter, food) and those things that we want (tablet, games, chocolate).

Other news:

PE for this term will be on WEDNESDAYS. Please note the change of day for this.

Sports Project will remain on Tuesdays.
