One Childhood, One Chance

W/b Monday 16th January - Team Royal and Team Indigo

Guided Reading

This week in Guided Reading we finished off our learning on the Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson. The Snail and the Whale: Amazon.co.uk: Donaldson, Julia, Scheffler, Axel: 8580001058245: Books

We started the week by becoming the Snail or the Whale in the hot seat! We had to ask the 'Snail' or the 'Whale' questions about their adventure. We then moved on to building up our comprehension skills by answering questions about an illustration for example, how many snails can you see? What is the weather like? We used this learning the next day to answer comprehension questions on The Snail and the Whale. We had to find the answers in the book! We were so good at this :)

Next week we will be starting a brand-new book... Traction Man by Mini Grey.

English

In English this week, we have focused on using adjectives, verbs and punctuation to write our own version of The Snail and the Whale. The children have worked so incredibly hard on their writing this week. Their stories are absolutely phenomenal. Well done Year 2!

Spellings

In Spellings this week, we have been look at the spelling rule - a that makes an or sounds for example ball, tall, fall, altogether, already, also, although. We noticed that if the a comes before an l, it can sound like or. We have been practising writing these words in lots of ways to help us remember this rule :)

Maths

In Maths this week we have focused our learning on subtraction using the column method.

We started the week by looking at subtraction without any exchanging, for example...

We learnt that we ALWAYS subtract the ones first and then subtract the tens after.

Once we were secure with this, we learnt how to exchange from the tens column. We solved problems like...

Next week we will be continuing with addition and subtraction using the column method whilst looking at inverse and how we can use the opposite skill to support us!

Thematic Curriculum

In Passion for Fashion this week we have been scientists and designers! We started the week by investigating materials that would be suitable for an apron. We had to investigate materials to see if they would be strong, waterproof but also suitable to wear. We concluded that soft plastic would make a great material for an apron as it is strong, waterproof but also light and comfortable to wear unlike metal or hard plastic!

We then became designers! So far this week, we have learnt the skill of joining 2 materials together by stapling, glueing and even by using a running stitch!

Love to Learn - Friday 20th January, due back Wednesday 25th January

This week we would like you to complete a book review on your favourite book! Remember you also have your AR quizzes to continue taking but also you now have a TTRS log in which you can log in on at any time.
