The Gruffalo's Child : Donaldson, Julia, Scheffler, Axel: Amazon.co.uk: BooksEnglish

This week in English we have started ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ by Julia Donaldson.

We have been focusing on the reading skills of clarifying, answering questions and summarising! When summarising the story, we focused on using time conjunctions such as first of all, next, then, later, after that.

Here is an example of the types of questions we have been answering.

RWI

In RWI this week we have been focusing on building up fluency when reading, this included focusing on pace, speed, expressions and reading punctuation. Any additional practice at home will be hugely beneficial.

SPAG (Spellings, Punctuation and Grammar)

This week in SpaG we have been looking at the sound kn and gn. We have learnt that these sounds sound like n. We have read words, sorted words and written words with these sounds in. We have looked at words such as gnaw, knight, gnome, knot and design.

Thematic curriculum

This week we have started the brand new unit – Fire Fire! We learnt that this unit is all about History and we will be learning about the significant event in the past, The Great Fire of London! We learnt that some History can be good but also it might not always be so good, we unfortunately can’t change History but we can definitely learn from it.

We started the week by learning what chronological order is. We learnt this by creating a timeline of events from our own life such as birth, birthdays, Halloween 2023 and today! We then used this learning to understand past and present. We started to look at the place where the Great Fire took place… London. We discussed what London used to be like in the past and what it is like today. We focused on significant buildings, houses and transport.

Art

This term we will be looking at Sculpture! We started by exploring techniques that we might used with clay such as pinch and pull, squeezing and rolling. Take a look at us using these techniques!

Handwriting

In Handwriting, we have been practising our print letters using the RWI patters. Super handwriting Team Aqua and Team Topaz!

Next week in:

Next week in English we will be continuing The Gruffalo’s Child, we will be focusing on constructing simple sentences.

Next week in Maths we will be learning about odd and even numbers, repeated addition and looking at arrays at when exploring multiplication.

Next week in Thematic we will continue with Fire Fire. We will be looking at jobs from the past and present day and discussing similarities and differences.
