One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly news! 5.1.24

What a great first week back for Team Aqua and Team Topaz. Check out what we have been up to!

As you may have seen on Mr McAuley’s Heads Up video, we have a new teacher starting with us from Monday. Miss Kennedy will be working within Year 2 in the mornings and teaching across the school in the afternoons. In the mornings, Miss Kennedy will be supporting children within Year 2 and taking small learning groups for English and Maths. These groupings will be reviewed throughout the term.

Maths

This week in maths we began by estimating where numbers should be plotted on a number line.

Later in the week we looked at rounding numbers, we had to round the numbers we found to the nearest multiple of 10. We used the rhyme below and a number line to help us.

Next week in maths we will be learning the column method using addition!

Fact of the week!

Next week our Fact of the Week is

5 X 2 = 10

English

This week in English we have looked at the book Max by Bob Graham. This week we started by sequencing the story and orally retelling the story using pictures. Next we retold the stories we focused on constructing accurate sentences using time conjunctions and punctuation.

You can find the link to the story below:

Next week we will be focusing on exciting adjectives to describe the setting, using noun phrases and present tense verbs.

RWI

In RWI this week we have been focusing on building up fluency when reading, this included focusing on pace, speed, expressions and reading punctuation. Any additional practice at home will be hugely beneficial.

Guided Reading

This term we have started Guided Reading! In Guided Reading this week we have predicted what might happen in the book Max by Bob Graham. Next, we learnt how to use a dictionary, and this helped us clarify the words we were unsure of in the text.

SPAG (Spellings, Punctuation and Grammar)

This week in SpaG we have looked at the sounds wr, rr and r. We sorted them and then taught each other how to read the words fluently.

PSHE

This week we have looked at our champion of courage Marc Chagall. We took inspiration from Marc Chagall’s stained glass window named ‘Peace Window’. We created our own window piece as a year group and took photos of us flying just like in Marc Chagall’s artwork. We learnt that Marc Chagall created many pieces of artwork after he left Paris due to the war and became a very successful artist.
