One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly news! 23.2.24

What a great first week back Team Aqua and Team Topaz have had!

PSHE

On Monday we looked at British Values, democracy, rule of law, tolerance and respect and individual liberty. We learnt that democracy means we have a say in the rules. So, we had to go around the classroom and decide which option we would prefer! We had to answer questions like where would you prefer your water bottle to be, would you prefer peer massage or guided meditation this afternoon and would you prefer a mixture of fruit in the fruit bowl or just one choice. We learnt that rules are needed to keep everybody safe and looked at rules when at school, the beach, in the car and out in the playground. We talked about how we are all unique, and how we should show equality and respect to all people.

In the afternoon, we looked at the Protected Characteristics and that the term 'Protected Characteristics' was first introduced in The Equality Act 2010. This act defined nine specific characteristics that are protected from discrimination. We learnt that it is against the law to discriminate against someone because of a protected characteristic. We focused our learning on stereotypes surrounding the sex we were born. We created a class piece of artwork to celebrate our learning.

Maths

This week in maths we have been looking at time! We made resources to support us in telling the time to every 5 minutes! We have also been learning Time facts e.g. How many days in a week? If there are 7 days in a week, how many days are there in 2 weeks?

Next week in maths we will be measuring in cm and m!

Fact of the week!

Next week our Fact of the Week is  1 X 5 = 5

English

This week in English we have started our new book Growing Frogs by Vivian French. We started the week by writing captions and labeling frogspawn, tadpoles, froglets and frogs. Next, we wrote statements based on images from the book. Later in the week, we looked at writing our very own questions and answering our questions with statements.

Next week in English we will be continuing the book Growing Frogs

Guided Reading

This week in Guided Reading we predicted what may happen in the book Growing Frogs. We then used our drama skills to act out how the girl may have been feeling in parts of the book.

Thematic

This week we started our new unit Nurturing Nurses with our very own teddy bear hospital! This was a fantastic introduction into the unit and on Friday we learnt about Florence Nightingale and her life, her nursing accomplishments and how her work impacts us today.

World Book Day Thursday 7th March 2024

This year's World Book Day theme will be bedtime stories / reading for pleasure.  We invite children to share their favourite bedtime story book on this day and if they wish, come to school dressed in their bedtime clothing!  Children are invited to dress up as their favorite character from a book if they prefer another option.  We would like to remind families that there is no expectation for you to spend money on costumes.  An enjoyment of reading and sharing a story is our main aim for World Book Day this year.

The Chilton Masked Reader

This year, we will share Chilton Masked Reader videos for World Book Day.  These videos will be created by our talented members of staff who will read a story without reveling their faces.  We hope our Chilton families will enjoy the stories and guess who the masked readers are! Links to these videos will be available on all school Blogs.

Book Fayre

The Chilton Book Fayre will arrive on Monday 11th March and run until Friday 15th March outside the Year 5 classrooms. World Book Day book vouchers can we spent at the fayre. Cash and online payments are also available and a percentage of monies raised will go towards funding more books for Chilton children.
