One Childhood, One Chance

Year 3 Weekly News!

Another fantastic week in Year 3! Lets have a look at what we’ve been doing.

English

We have continued to write setting descriptions this week about a land that we have created that could arrive at the magic faraway tree. We used expanded noun phrases where we have expanded the description further using ‘with’ or ‘that’. We also used verbs and adverbs to describe how people do things in our land. Finally, we used fronted adverbials to describe when, where and how often something happened.

Next week we will be looking at poetry and language play including nonsense poems.

Maths

In maths, we’ve been looking at the 4 operations. On each day we looked at what methods we use for the operations and how we answer each one. We found that we use the column method for addition, subtraction and multiplication but used the bus stop method for division. On Friday, we’ve looked at how we can work out which operation we’re meant to be doing based on the symbol. We also discussed what language tells us which operation we’re using in word problems. For example, if the question asks how much something is ‘altogether’ then we know its addition. Likewise, if it says there are 4 groups of 12, then we know we’re multiplying 12 by 4.

Next week, we’re looking at money. Specifically, reading amounts of money, how to write it out and how we can show amounts of money with different coins.

Thematic

For our thematic learning, we have continued to learn about science. We started by continuing our learning about magnets. We discussed how the same poles of the magnet will repel one another while the opposite poles attract. We also discussed the magnetism of the earth.

After that we discussed how darkness is the absence of light and how light travels in a straight line and that light reflects off objects into our eyes so that we can see.

Finally, we discussed how a shadow is formed through an object blocking the light and used the words opaque, translucent and transparent. We made a shadow puppet show about part of the magic faraway tree story!

Love to Learn

READING: Children in Year 3 are expected to read at home at least three times a week. It is really important that the children bring in their reading records daily so that we can check in with progress and read with the children in school. MyOn is a great way for children to read independently. Once a book has been read on MyOn it will ask you to quiz and direct you to the AR website. Please read as often as possible at home. Thank you for your support.

Maths: Answer the questions on your worksheet about how much money is in each amount.

Year 3 Come Dine With Me, on the 21st March.

Easter will soon be here and we will be holding our traditional Easter egg hunts and bonnet parade in school.

For children in Years 3 – 6, they are also invited to enter the Key Stage Two bonnet / hat competition. This will be judged in year groups with prizes awarded.

Have a great weekend,
