One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 26.01.2024

Year 3 have had another super week! We really enjoyed our visit from Kent Police on Friday! Here is what else we have been up to:

In English this week, we have continued reading the text ‘The Tunnel’ by Anthony Browne and completed the AR quiz on this. We then continued writing our own suspense narratives, focussing on using powerful verbs and adverbs and complex sentences. We were so impressed with the children’s suspense writing and really enjoyed reading their stories.

Next week, we will begin to explore our final Anthony Browne book, Gorilla. Within our writing, we will be writing letters between the characters, focusing on formal and informal language as well as emotive language.

This week in maths, we have continued our learning on fractions, this time learning how to find equivalent fractions. We began the week by using bar models to find equivalent fractions, before moving on to use number lines. The resilience that the children showed with such a tricky topic was incredible, and we are so proud of the learning that they have produced. Year 3 truly are fraction superheroes!

Next week, we will be moving on to add and subtract two and three-digit numbers, including regrouping. We will be using the column method to support with this.

In our punctuation and grammar lessons this week, we have been learning how to write complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions. We use the acronym ISAWAWABUB to remember the subordinating conjunctions.

In our spelling sessions we have been revising how to spell words with the ‘sh’ sound spelt ‘ch’ and the ‘k’ sound spelt ‘ch’.

In our Thematic lessons this week, we have been participating in Science lessons. We began the week by learning about the purpose of our skeleton and the bones in our body using this very catchy song:

Learn the bones of the human body with the Bones Song! (

We then moved our learning on to look at skeletons in different animals, including the difference in movement between vertebrates, invertebrates with no skeleton and invertebrates with an exoskeleton.

Finally, we learnt about the purpose of the muscles in our bodies, including how they work.

Next week, we will be completing our Thematic Unit with DT. We will be focussing on designing and making a prosthetic leg from cardboard and split pins, then evaluating this against a criteria.

Love to Learn

Next week is National Storytelling Week! To celebrate this, we would like the children to learn a short story or tale of their choice to verbally tell the rest of the class. This can be any short story of their choice, but we would advise choosing one that the children love as it will make it easier for them to memorise.

We also ask that children bring in any cardboard from home for our DT lesson on Tuesday please.
