One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 18th November 2022

This week has been another fantastic week in Year 5! Here is what we have been up to:

In English, we have been learning how to use emotive language to write from viewpoint. We talked about how carefully selecting the vocabulary that we use in our writing can elicit emotions from the reader. We applied this to write a letter from the viewpoint of Jamie to his dad, describing his feelings following his meeting with Professor Forster.

Next week, we will be writing a biased argument, looking at formal language and modal verbs to persuade Jamie’s dad of the existence of the Bzz.

In maths, we looked at the properties of shape, including angles. We began the week by revising how to use a protractor to measure angles, differentiating between acute, obtuse, reflex and right angles. We then looked at a range of 2-D shapes and discussed the properties of these, including identifying parallel and perpendicular lines. We ended the week by looking at the difference between regular and irregular polygons, sorting between different shapes.

Next week, we will be learning how to calculate area and perimeter of composite shapes.

In the afternoons this week, we have been looking at our value of kindness. We began the week by celebrating Odd Sock Day, where we discussed the importance of anti-bullying campaigns and being unique. We then discussed the theme of empathy and how and when we can show empathy to others.

Next week, we will be continuing with spending our afternoons completing art lessons. We will be looking at famous space image replication and how to draw a sphere.

For home learning, a task on measuring angles has been allocated on MyMaths. Please complete this by next Friday. Some reading tasks on MyOn have also been set about space. Please read these and complete the quizzes.
