One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 12.1.24

Year 5 have enjoyed another wonderful week. Here's what we've been up to:

English

This week, we wrote an online news report on Usain Bolt's 100m victory in the 2012 Olympics in the format of online news outlets such as BBC Sport, Daily Mail and The Guardian. We included lots of factual language, direct speech for quotes and some informal language to grab and hold our reader's attention. We started reading through our Term 3 book 'Running on Empty' and read how AJ was in the Olympic Stadium that night for Bolt's victory. Next week, we will be writing poetry.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been working on rounding and decimal numbers. We practised our rounding skills to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 before moving on to rounding decimal numbers to the nearest whole and nearest tenth and hundredth. We then looked at how to add and subtract decimals using the column method. Next week, we will be studying Multiplication and Division.

Thematic Curriculum

In our afternoons this week, we have started our new Term 3 Thematic Unit 'Marvels of Matter'. We learnt all about the Anglo-Saxons and how and when they came to England. We studied a range of different Anglo Saxon items including jewellery, weapons and helmets before looking at the Anglo-Saxon heptarchy, which was the way the country was split into seven different kingdoms, each with its own King. Finally, we looked at the language used by the Anglo-Saxons and how it has influenced the language used today. In our Art lessons, we started our unit where we will be focusing on collages by studying 4 different artists famous for using collage techniques in their work. Next week, we will be making our own Anglo-Saxon brooches and studying the famous Anglo Saxon epic poem Beowulf.

Love to Learn

For these week's Love to Learn task, please could children choose and Anglo Saxon kingdom (Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, Sussex, Wessex, Essex, Kent) and research that kingdom. Who were the kings? What were they famous for? What was life like for Anglo Saxons in that kingdom? Findings can be presented in an interesting way of that child's choice.
