One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 1.3.24

Well done to Year 5 for another excellent week. Additionally, we have some wonderful news to share with you. Mr Mason and his wife welcomed their second child into the world on Tuesday morning.

English

This week, we have started to read Hugh Lupton's 'The Adventures of Odysseus. The prologue introduced the Trojan War before chapter 1 introduced us to a weary Odysseus being washed up on to an island after being away from home for 19 years. In our English lessons, we designed our own mythological creature and the wrote a non chronological report about it focusing on structure and technical vocabulary. Next week, we will be writing both setting and character descriptions focusing on expanded noun phrases and figurative language.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been studying longer, multistep word problems that are solved using the four operations. The problems have come from a range of different contexts. We recapped 'RUCSAC' and the bar model to give us the best chance of solving these problems successfully. Next week, we will be converting units of time.

Thematic Curriculum

This week, we have started our study of Ancient Greece in our Term 4 thematic unit, 'Gods and Mortals'. We looked at the geographical features of Ancient Greece and how it differs from modern day Greece as well as looking at the role city-states such as Athens, Sparta and Thebes played in Ancient Greece. We also looked at the birth of Democracy in Athens and how that has affected life since before studying the history and the legacy of the ancient Olympic Games.

Love to Learn

For the children's Love to Learn task this week, please could they invent their own Olympic event. This could be based on something from the ancient or modern day Olympics. They can present information about their event in a creative way of their choosing - perhaps they could even video record themselves trying it out!

Spellings

Spellings to learn for a test on Friday 8th March - ought, bought, thought, nought, brought, fought, rough, tough, enough, cough, though, although, dough, through, thorough, borough, plough, bough

World Book Day - Thursday 7th March 2024

This year's World Book Day theme will be bedtime stories / reading for pleasure.  We invite children to share their favourite bedtime story book on this day and if they wish, come to school dressed in their bedtime clothing!  Children are invited to dress up as their favorite character from a book if they prefer another option.  We would like to remind families that there is no expectation for you to spend money on costumes.  An enjoyment of reading and sharing a story is our main aim for World Book Day this year.

The Chilton Masked Reader

This year, we will share Chilton Masked Reader videos for World Book Day.  These videos will be created by our talented members of staff who will read a story without reveling their faces.  We hope our Chilton families will enjoy the stories and guess who the masked readers are! Links to these videos will be available on all school Blogs.

Book Fayre

The Chilton Book Fayre will arrive on Monday 11th March and run until Friday 15th March outside the Year 5 classrooms. World Book Day book vouchers can we spent at the fayre. Cash and online payments are also available and a percentage of monies raised will go towards funding more books for Chilton children.
