One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 26.4.24

Year 5 have had another amazing week and did such a wonderful job with their Ancient Greek assembly! Thank you to all the parents who came to watch and hear about our learning.

English

This week, we continued reading Michelle Paver's 'Wolf Brother' where Torak befriended Wolf, his guide to the Mountain of the World Spirit. We wrote a newspaper report detailing the Demon Bear's attack on Torak and Fa focusing on writing an appropriate introduction, using direct and indirect speech in our paragraphs and manipulating our tenses when appropriate. Next week, we will write a non-chronological report about wolves.

Maths

In Maths this week, we recapped our addition and subtraction skills then used them in a decimal context. We tackled a range of addition problems with decimals before moving on to subtracting decimals and finally solving multistep word problems with both addition and subtraction of decimals. Next week, we will be studying multiplication and division.

Thematic

This week, we have continued to dive into Ramsgate's illustrious past in our Term 5 topic 'Tides of Change'. We studied the role Ramsgate played in Operation Dynamo and the evacuation of allied troops from Dunkirk in WWII as well as researching a number of famous Ramsgate landmarks including the royal harbour, the Ramsgate tunnels and the obelisk. We also continued our Be Here, Be You, Belong PSHE learning by designing a Gladiator that represents ourselves. Next week, we will be studying Ramsgate's maritime history before moving onto our Science unit.

Home Learning

For home learning this week, please could children choose a different Ramsgate landmark (not the harbour, tunnels or obelisk) and research its history. The children could even go and visit the landmark and take photographs. As always, the children's findings can be a presented in a creative way of the children's choosing.

A reminder that this term's PE for children is be SWIMMING and this takes place on FRIDAY AFTERNOONS. Children can come to school in PE kit and change for swimming at the leisure centre.
