One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 3.5.24

Well done to Year 5 for another fantastic week of learning. They have certainly earned that Bank Holiday day of rest!

English

This week, we continued reading Michelle Paver's 'Wolf Brother' and Torak has entered the Raven Clan and defeated Hord using steam convincing Renn that he is the prophetised 'Listener'. In our English lessons, we planned and wrote a non-chronological report about Wolves focusing on structure, using technical vocabulary and using ambitious punctuation. Next week, we will be finishing and publishing our non-chrons and writing some poetry.

Maths

In Maths this week, we looked at the Commutative, Associative and Distributive laws of multiplication. We looked at difference examples and created reference cards to help us remember these rules. We also spent time looking at the different ways that we can interpret remainders when dividing. We looked at when we would use the remainder as the answer, ignore it, round up or give our answer as a decimal/fraction. Next week, we will be studying Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.

Thematic

This week, we have continued to dive into Ramsgate's illustrious past in our Term 5 topic 'Tides of Change'. We looked at the maritime history of Ramsgate and researched some of the exhibitions in the Ramsgate Maritime Museum. We then completed our first Science investigation of the unit. In our experiment, we found that objects of different weights will still fall at the same speed due to the amount of gravity acting upon them.  We also continued our Be Here, Be You, Belong PSHE learning by looking at Jimmy Eat World's 2001 pop punk banger 'The Middle'. We studied the lyrics and discussed how they can make us feel and why they are positive. We created some artwork based on the lyrics and Mr Coney even taught us how to play the song in our guitar lessons.

Home Learning

For home learning this week, please could children find a song where the lyrics mean something to them (like The Middle). As always, the children's findings can be a presented in a creative way of the children's choosing such as completing a piece of artwork that show what the lyrics mean to them or performing the song themselves.

A reminder that this term's PE for children is be SWIMMING and this takes place on FRIDAY AFTERNOONS. Children can come to school in PE kit and change for swimming at the leisure centre.
