Weekly News! 25.04.25

Year 5 have had an incredible start to Term 5!

In English this week, we have started reading Street Child by Berlie Doherty. This week we have written character descriptions of Jim Jarvis and Mr Spinks. Next Week, we will be writing setting descriptions of the inside and outside of the workhouse focusing on using sentence openers.

Maths

During our maths lessons this week, we have been measuring and drawing angles, we have learnt how to use a protractor. We have also how to identify types of angles. Next week, we will be doing some more work with angles looking at angles of a straight line and around a point. We will also be learning about scaling up and down and using this to solve problems.

Thematic

We have started our new topic in Thematic ‘Tides of Change’ we started the week by taking a walk down to Ramsgate Harbour to look at the historical landmarks. We then created a timeline of the landmarks and other key events that have happened in our local area. Next week, we will be starting our Be Here, Be You, Belong theme, we will be reading the poem entitled ‘I will Soar’. We will be looking at the landmarks in more detail and studying the importance of Ramsgate’s fishing industry and trade.

Home Learning

This week we would like you to research Victorian Workhouses, this will link to our English learning next we. When researching  try to find out

  • What they looked like?

  • What happened in them?

  • Who would have been in the Workhouse?

  • Where were the Workhouses located? (were there any in our local area?)

You can show what you research however you like, for example, you might want to create a mind-map, leaflet, labelled diagram, model or even just take notes.
