One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 16.5.25

What a lovely week we have had in Year 2! As we near the end of Term 5, the children's energy and enthusiasm continue to astound us, keeping our spirits high and our days lively. It’s been wonderful to see them so engaged and excited about their learning.

English

The Children have been really getting into our new book, 'The Lonely Beast,' and it’s been fantastic to see how much they’re enjoying it and how it’s helping them with their writing.

We kicked off the week by diving into expanded noun phrases. The children had a go at creating these fun, descriptive phrases to add more colour to their writing. Then, we moved on to using powerful verbs and adverbs, which have really helped them describe the action in the story more vividly.

As the week went on, we also introduced conjunctions to help them create compound sentences, making their writing flow better. To wrap things up, we had a showpiece activity where the children rewrote part of 'The Lonely Beast,' using all the new skills they've picked up. They had a blast adding lots of action and excitement!

Reading

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319

For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader

Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

In maths this week we have focused on the concepts of measuring and mass.

The children have been actively engaged in applying their knowledge of the four operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—to solve problems related to mass. It has been wonderful to see them taking on the challenge of word problems, where they not only find solutions but also reason through their answers. This skill is essential as it encourages them to articulate their thought processes and enhances their overall understanding of mathematical concepts.

As we continue to develop these skills, I encourage you to reinforce this learning at home. You could involve your child in simple measuring tasks around the house, such as weighing ingredients for cooking or measuring furniture for a new arrangement.

Thematic

As we reach the conclusion of our thematic topic, I am excited to share our incredible journey through the puppet project with you. The children's enthusiasm and energy have truly been a joy to witness, and we are immensely proud of their achievements.

Throughout this project, the children engaged in a variety of activities, demonstrating remarkable aptitude in their joining techniques. They embarked on a journey that involved researching materials, designing their puppets, creating them, and finally evaluating their work. This process not only fostered their creativity but also allowed them to apply their scientific understanding of the materials involved.

The children showed off their excellent skills in design technology; they employed techniques such as overstitching and stapling with great confidence. Their hard work and dedication have been nothing short of inspiring!

Next week we will be moving onto RE.

Love to Learn

We would love to see the children practicing their number bonds to 20. This is a really useful skill to recall quickly and will help to support lots of areas of maths.

Be creative and have fun!
