One Childhood, One Chance

Festival of Art Inspires Creative Children

Art is at the heart of creative learning for children at Chilton Primary in Ramsgate.

As part of their ongoing appreciation of a wide range of arts, pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 study a range of diverse artists from around the world.

They also explore various methods to create pieces including printing, painting, oil pastels, etchings and clay modelling. They also delve into the use of colour, tone and effects.

Chilton’s talents have also been appreciated in the wider community through the recent annual young artists’ festival run by Margate Rotary Club.

The theme this year was British Wildlife and Living on the Coast, and to enter children had to create artwork on an A4 sized piece of paper in any medium.

Trisha from Year 2 was chosen as the winner in her age group, with Dulcie and Jemima from Year 3 and Everleigh from year 1 winning commendations from the judges for their work.

Their artwork was displayed at Westwood Cross retail centre with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Margate presenting prizes and certificates to the winners.

Chilton Head of School Hannah Cheshire said: “Art is a strong part of our curriculum and creative learning supports children's well-being, collaborative skills and also gives them time to be reflective and to talk.

“The young artists’ competition gave our children a valuable experience in seeing their work on show in public and it was interesting for them to view the artistic endeavours of young people from across the district.”

Chilton Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with partner schools Upton Juniors and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
