One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 13.6.25

What a truly wonderful week we have had in Year 2. Our students have been remarkable, and I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts and courage in taking on new challenges.

On Tuesday, the children embarked on an exciting trip to Wildwood, where they had the opportunity to explore a variety of wildlife and learn more about the natural world. It was heartening to see them embrace each experience with enthusiasm, whether it was observing animals up close or participating in educational activities. Their curiosity and willingness to engage made this trip not only enjoyable but incredibly enriching.

Additionally, we held our much-anticipated class assembly, during which the pupils showcased their talents and shared their learning with you all. Their bravery in standing up in front of an audience was commendable, and I appreciate your support in helping them prepare for this moment. It is always a pleasure to witness their pride in their achievements and the joy of sharing their work with family and friends.

English

In our English lessons this week, we have continued our exploration of 'Grace and Family', delving deeper into the rich culture and geography of The Gambia. It has been a delightful journey of discovery, and the children have shown great enthusiasm in learning about this vibrant country.

As part of our studies, we introduced vocabulary related to The Gambia, which has really helped to enhance the children’s writing skills. I am proud to inform you that they have crafted some wonderful information leaflets, showcasing everything they have learned. These leaflets not only reflect their creativity but also their growing understanding of a different culture.

Next week we will be starting a new book! 'The Magic Finger'

Reading

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319

For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader

Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

In our mathematics lessons this week, we started off by revisiting the concepts of time, specifically looking at o'clock, half past, and quarter to/past. The children have been practising telling the time in five-minute intervals, which has been both fun and challenging. It's wonderful to see their confidence grow as they grasp these important skills.

As we progressed, we introduced the topic of fractions. We recapped our earlier learning and began exploring some more complex equivalent fractions. This topic can be tricky, but the children are showing a determined attitude towards mastering it. To support their understanding at home, I recommend using everyday situations, such as sharing food or grouping objects, to demonstrate fractions in a practical way. For instance, asking questions like "If we cut this pizza into four equal slices, how many slices does each person get?" can reinforce their learning.

Thematic

This week we’ve kicked off our new thematic topic, 'Wonderful World', with a fantastic trip to Wildwood Wildlife Park. It was a wonderful experience for all of us, and I wanted to take a moment to update you on the engaging activities the children took part in.

During our visit, we participated in a habitats workshop, where the children learned about the essential needs of various animals. They had the opportunity to explore the park and observe some fascinating creatures, including bears, deer, and arctic foxes. It's always heartening to see their curiosity in action as they connect what they’ve learned in the classroom to the real world.

Following our visit, we have continued to build on this learning by categorising things into those that are dead, alive, and never been alive. This has provided a great foundation for our discussions on food chains, which we wrapped up the week with. I encourage you to ask your child about what they've learned; I’m sure they will be keen to share their newfound knowledge!

Love To Learn

This week we would love for you to create something that shows a food chain! This could be drawn in your book, made with paper chains however you wish :)
