Maths
This week in maths, we have been continuing our learning on multiplication! On Monday, we learnt to describe arrays in two ways. We learnt that arrays can be turned around and a calculation of 5x2, can also be 2X5. We had to pick a calculation and show an array on our white boards. We then had to show the alternative array and write the calculation down. Later in the week we looked at how we can write multiplication stories. First, we looked at how many groups there are of an item, then how many each group has and how many there are altogether. Once we found the answers we were able to write our calculation down in our multiplication story.
Next week in maths we will be looking at division.
Fact of the week
Our fact of the week this week is:
8+1
1+ 8
8-1
Read, Write Inc.
This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been reviewing sounds we know and learning new sounds. We have continued to use our sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops. On Tuesday we wrote instructions on how to plant a seed and nurture it into a plant.
Reading
Mondays – RWI books to be changed by an adult. Please could ALL reading wallets be put in the trays so that we can check who has earned a certificate.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – children can change their learning zone book (the one with the coloured sticker on). Please help them to have this book ready to change when they come in to the classroom in the mornings. Thank you!
Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves (on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)- first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.
Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!
There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.
If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Thematic
This week we kick started our new unit ‘Everchanging Environments’. On Monday we learnt that our environment is the world around us. The air that we breathe is part of our environment. Green spaces near our homes and school are part of our environment so are forests and oceans. We discussed our big question ’How does our environment change over the year?’ In preparation for our new topic, we planted lots of seeds and bulbs in the spring ready to observe during the summer. Whilst planting these we discussed what plants need to grow as well as where and when best to plant them. We have been tending to them carefully, watering them during Power Play. It has been so exciting to watch our seedlings starting to grow and our bulbs beginning to sprout. We will begin recording our observations in our growth journal. On Thursday and Friday, we looked at what evergreen and deciduous trees are and how we can identify the difference. We learnt the names of a range of deciduous and evergreen trees and went into the forest area to identify the different trees.
Next week we will be continuing science, the children will learn to identify the basic structures of flowering plants and we will be going on our trip to Felderland Farm!
