Wow what a scorcher it has been today! Despite the warm weather this week, Year 5 have had a very busy week. Our STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and maths) day at CCGS was brillaint. From making rock cakes to molten metal, the pupils thoroughly enjoyed it.
English
This week, we have continued to watch and analyse the animation entitled The Piano. We have learned how to manipulate tenses to write a flash back.
Next week, we will continue to write about the animation. We will be using the skill of writing emotively within a flashback. We will then move on to read the classic poem The Highway Man and learn about balanced arguments.
Maths
This week, we learnt about the properties of rectangles (oblong/square) and learnt how to use these properties to solve problems.
Next week, we will be learning what a percentage is, how we write it and then how this links to fractions and decimals.
Thematic/STEAM/DT
This week, we have learnt about water resistance and we had planned an experiment to find out which shape hull of boat would be best for an RNLI boat in an emergency. We also designed, made and evaluated a locomotive, using saws, circuits and pulleys. We had the help of an engineer from South Eastern railways.
Next week, we will be completing our investigation about boat hulls. We will also be learning about the effects of gravity and its relationship with an object’s mass.
Love to Learn
We will be showing our love to learn task from last week (song) one day next week.
For this week’s task, please look all around you for where percentages are used, for example on electronic devices and in shops. Please make a poster to show what you found.
