Weekly News 4.7.25

It has been an incredibly warm week and Year 4 have handled it brilliantly. We have still managed lots of learning amongst many fresh air breaks to keep us all alive and sane!
English
In English this week, we have been focusing on persuasive writing. We have practised using superlatives (dirtiest, most dangerous, most vicious) to describe the ‘Rat-Boy’ as a horrific monster that has escaped the Tapscrews’ freak show. We then worked with modal verbs (should, must, must not, need to) to urge the police to arrest the Tapscrews for kidnapping and abusing Roger. We then looked at how choosing the best emotive language can help bring our reader around to our way of thinking. We finished off the week by using these skills in compound and complex sentences.
Next week, we will finish reading ‘I was a Rat’ and learn some more persuasive writing skills.
Maths
In maths this week, we have been looking at lines of symmetry and reflections. We learned that a regular polygon will have the same number of lines of symmetry as it does size whereas this is not the case for irregular polygons. We practised checking for lines of symmetry using mirrors or by cutting out and folding the shapes. We then practised reflecting shapes and patterns via a line of symmetry, making sure to check for the distance a point is from the line, to ensure the reflected point is plotted accurately. We ended the week looking at classifying shapes using Venn and Caroll diagrams.
Next week we will be looking at the properties of 3D shapes and exploring the different ways people make spending decisions and budget their money.
Thematic
To end our thematic topic ‘My World, Your World’, we discussed how the public can take care of the wildlife at Pegwell Bay, making posters of the DOs and DON’Ts around the saltmarshs. We applied our knowledge of map symbols and 4-figure grid references to maps of Spain and then we ended by working in groups to prepare a presentation entitled ‘Is Spain a better place to live than England?’.
Next week we will be looking at the different ways we, and others, express their identity in society.
Spellings
There will be no spellings this week.

Love to Learn
Next Friday we will be looking at how people budgets and make decisions around money. We don’t have a task for your Love to Learn books this week but you may like to talk about the different ways in which you budget for holidays, food, fun etc.
