What an incredible second week of Year 4. The children have worked so hard throughout this week!

Maths

This week in maths, we have been continuing our number and place value skills. We have looked at the value of the numbers in different columns. For example, if a 6 is in the hundreds column it is worth 600. We also worked on finding 1,10,100 and 1000 more and less than any given number. Finishing the week by comparing and ordering up to 5-digit numbers.

Next week we will be moving on to adding 4-digit numbers with regrouping.

English

In English this week we have continued our book Gregory Cool and continued or work on setting descriptions. However, this week we moved onto using skills such as adverbs for fronted adverbials, prepositions and similes in our writing.  We finished the week by doing a showpiece to show all the skills we have learnt over the last few weeks.

Next week, we are going to be focusing on writing in role as different characters from the book.

Thematic

To begin our Thematic learning for Year 4 we started our first unit called ‘Make some Noise’. This unit focusses on science and we have been learning about how sounds are made through vibrations and how volume changes when the distance is increased. We completed two of our own investigations to prove this.

Next week we will be looking at how sound travels and the different pitches sounds are.

Spellings

This week’s spellings are words that begin with the prefix un-.

unwrap, unable, untidy, uncertain, unlucky, unhealthy, unusual, unpopular, uncomfortable and unofficial

Love to Learn

Linked to our science learning this week, you are encouraged to create a piece of work related to how sounds are made. It could be pictures of an investigation, a piece of writing, a poster or you could make something. It is up to you how you show how a sound can be made.

Accelerated Reader and TTRS

The children’s usernames remain the same as last year. These are their cps numbers and start with cps003… The passwords this year for everything are now Viking25 (last year’s password was Viking 24). If you have any trouble logging in to AR to complete the book quizzes or logging in to TTRS, please do let your child’s teacher know.

Dates to remember

17th September – Meet and greet for years 3 and 4 from 8.45am-9am in your child’s classroom. This is an opportunity to meet your child’s teaching team and get to hear about what to expect in the year ahead

25th September – Chilton School’s 50th Birthday (please see separate letters for details on how we will be celebrating this)

26th September – Thrive coffee morning 9am-10.30am in the studio – a chance to meet our well-being team

9th October - 9am Year 4 Harvest assembly in school hall – please do come in and watch

17th October – Final day of term
