One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly news! 12/9/2025

We've just wrapped up our second week back and what a fantastic start it's been! The transition into Year 2 has been so smooth, with the children already feeling settled and confident. Routines are becoming second nature, friendships are blossoming, and there’s a real sense of excitement in the air as we dive into our new learning. It’s been wonderful to watch the children embrace their new challenges with enthusiasm. Here’s a glimpse of what we’ve been up to this week!

English

We’ve made a strong start with our phonics sessions, revisiting familiar sounds and exploring new ones. It’s been wonderful watching the children confidently spot their “special friends,” use ‘Fred Talking’ to break down words and grow in confidence each day.

In writing, we've been using Fred Fingers to help sound out words, and the progress in the children’s independence is already clear. We’ve also been focusing on red words, which are essential for both reading and writing. Some children have taken home packs of red words to practice, and any extra time spent on these at home would make a huge difference. It really helps reinforce what we're working on in class.

In English, the children have been exploring adjectives to describe characters, thinking carefully about how to make their writing more detailed and interesting. It's been great to see their creativity shining through as they build their vocabulary.

Reading

Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child.

Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult.

The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning.

Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programme and will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online. Children may have these log ins on a sticker inside their reading record!

Please ensure reading folders are placed in the trays each morning so that we can read with your child and update their books when needed.

Chilton Heroes Reading Certificate – Each week, one child per class will be recognised for their fantastic reading in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

In maths this week, we’ve been working on partitioning, comparing, and ordering numbers. The children have been practising breaking numbers down into tens and ones, which helps them understand place value more clearly. We’ve also been comparing numbers using symbols like greater than, less than, and equal to, and they’ve been doing a fantastic job of ordering numbers in the correct sequence. It’s been wonderful to see their growing confidence in numbers, and they’re beginning to make connections that will help them in more complex maths as the year goes on.

Thematic

In our thematic lessons this week, we’ve been learning about what plants need to grow. The children have been exploring the essential elements like water, sunlight, and soil, and how each plays a crucial role in helping plants thrive. To bring this to life, we ventured into our Forest School area, where the children eagerly searched for different types of plants and observed their surroundings. It was exciting to see their curiosity in action as they identified leaves, roots, and even small signs of new plant growth, all while applying what they’d learnt about the needs of plants.

Love to Learn

This week’s Love to Learn is all about ordering numbers around the house; to reinforce their Maths learning, we would like the children to practice ordering numbers they find in their house, be as creative as you would like. This could be the temperature on your fridge to the twelve on your clock!

Also, if you haven’t already, please personalise home learning books. We would love for the children to decorate the front covers of their books with drawings, stickers, or photos that reflect who they are and what makes them happy. It’s a lovely way to take ownership of their learning and bring a little bit of themselves into their work.
