One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 19.9.25

Wow what a fantastic week in Year 1, we have been working incredibly hard with our learning this week and we even went on our first trip! Take a look at what we have been getting up to 😊

Thank you to the parents that were able to come in this week to the meet and greet morning. Please find attached the PowerPoint that we went through, if you have any questions, please feel free to come and talk to us, our doors are always open.

Maths

On Monday we looked at our number bonds to 10. We used a tens frame to show these number bonds and we have done so well with this learning! On Tuesday we continued learning our number bonds to 10 and showed this in different ways. We used our tens frame and counters, pictures and even challenged ourselves to draw our own to show the answer! On Wednesday and Thursday, we showed our number bonds to 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. We even used different resources to show these number bonds. In different ways. We have done so well with this learning!

Today, we have been learning how to develop our problem-solving skill of reasoning. We started off the lesson by looking at what happens when we add 0 to a number. We then worked with our partners to use resources to find the answers to calculations when we add 1. We then had to work together to explain what is happening. We were amazing at this!

Next week in maths we will begin to partition numbers in to part, part whole.

Fact of the week

Each week we will have a fact of the week. We will learn the addition fact(s) and the related subtraction fact(s). This week our fact of the week is:

2 + 1 = 3

1 + 2 = 3

Read, Write Inc.

This week in Read, Write Inc. We have met our new RWI teachers. We have been reviewing our sounds and working so hard phonetically reading words. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.

Our Reading for Pleasure book this week was The Gruffalo’s Child. Storytime in Year 1 is a magical part of our day. We gather together to enjoy a story for pleasure, letting our imaginations come alive as we dive into exciting adventures, colourful characters and wonderful worlds. Sometimes we bring stories to life with props that make the tale even more fun, and we create story maps to help us remember what happens. We love to innovate, changing parts of the story to make it our own and we think carefully about questions that help us understand the text even better. Storytime is not just about reading, it’s about exploring, imagining, and sharing the joy of stories together. Next week our story of the week will be

Thematic

This week we went on our first ever Year 1 trip to Nethercourt park! We were all so excited and showed the Chilton way beautifully, our adults were so impressed! We looked at what Nethercourt looked like today in the present and compared it to the past and found out about Nethercourt house and how it had been a manor house, a farmhouse, a vicarage, a civil defence centre and in WWI a military hospital.

Next week we will be inviting you to come in (please see below for more information) and we will be looking at Augustus Pugin.

Family Visit

To enrich our students' learning experience, we warmly invite parents and grandparents to come into the school on Wednesday, 24th September, at 1:45 pm. If possible, please bring along any old photographs, toys, or objects from the past that may help the children visualise how things have changed. We will set up a “mini-museum” in the hall, where the items will be displayed, and children will be encouraged to roam, explore, and engage by asking questions. We will provide tea and coffee to make it a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

We look forward to creating special memories with the children and making history come to life for them. Thank you for your support, and we can't wait to see you on the 24th!

Reading

Today the children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.

Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this.

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly. Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home.

There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.

If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
