What a fantastic week we’ve had in Year 4! The children have been working incredibly hard across all subjects, showing curiosity, creativity and great determination in their learning. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to.
Maths
This week in Maths, we have been developing our understanding of division. The children practised dividing numbers by 10 and 100, building on their place value knowledge and recognising how digits move when dividing by powers of ten.
We then moved on to the bus stop method, using it to solve division problems with increasing confidence and accuracy. The children have done brilliantly in remembering the steps and applying their times table knowledge to help them divide larger numbers.
Here we are using counters to learn about the link between sharing, grouping and the bus stop method.
Next week, we will be turning our attention to time. We’ll be exploring analogue and digital clocks, learning how to tell and compare different times of the day. If you have a chance at home, please encourage your child to practise reading clocks around the house – it’s a great real-world skill!
English
In English, we began working on our exciting new information text about robots. The children explored the key features of non-fiction writing, including using titles, subheadings, pictures with captions, and writing in clear, factual sentences.
We have also focused on creating complex and compound sentences to make our writing more interesting and detailed. It’s been wonderful to see so many children using a range of conjunctions to extend their ideas.
Next week, we will continue our robot information texts, learning how to use commas in a list and cause-and-effect conjunctions to show relationships between ideas. We can’t wait to see the finished pieces!
Thematic
In our Thematic lessons, we’ve been exploring the world of science and discovery. The children learned about two famous scientists — Heinrich Hertz and Ernest Mach — and discussed how their work has shaped the world we live in today. They were fascinated to learn how Hertz’s discoveries helped lead to the invention of modern wireless communication, and how Mach’s work influenced physics and sound studies.
Next week, our focus will shift to RE, where we’ll begin exploring Sikhism.
LOVE TO LEARN
This week, we would like you to practice the bus stop method from this week.

Digital leaders
Chilton are looking to recruit 6 children from year 4 to join the digital leaders team. In this role, your child will become an expert in staying safe online. They will support other children in school to do this by leading assemblies and workshops amongst other things. If your child would like to become a digital leader, we ask that they make a short video introducing themselves and why they think they would make a good digital leader. We ask that you send the video to Mrs Cheshire at hannah.cheshire@chiltonprimary.co.uk by Friday 17th October. We will announce who will be joining the team on Friday 31st October. Good luck to all the children.
