7.11.2025 Weekly News!

Another busy week in Year 5 has concluded and we want to say a big well done to all the children for showing us increased resilience and maturity.
English
This week, we have improved our descriptive writing even further by learning how to create mood and atmosphere. We do this by carefully choosing vocabulary to suit the mood we want our audience to imagine. We created an imaginary planet for an alien in a piece of artwork and then described this using our new writing skills.
Next week, we will be writing in role as Jamie (the main character in our class text) and then as other characters. We will learn how to express how that character feels and thinks, whilst writing in first person.
Maths
This week, we have been learning how to find equivalent fractions, such as ¾=6/8 by using both fraction walls and also then a method that involves multiplying (or dividing) the numerator and denominator by the same number. We then used this skill to order and compare fractions. Finally, we learnt how to find a fraction of an amount, when the denominator is one (unit fraction). Some of us learnt how to do this when the denominator is more than one.
Next week, we will be identifying and describing 2D and 3D shapes. We will then learn about regular and irregular shapes and use our reasoning skills about angles and side length to classify and identify them.
Next week, we will be taking part in a TTRS battle within the year group. We ask that the children engage with TTRS as much as possible at home from Monday-Friday! May the best team win!
Thematic
This week, we have LOVED learning about our solar system. We learnt the order of the planets and then took part in a project. This project involved researching and presenting information about the rock and gas planets to another group.
Next week, we will have a break from thematic and spend a week learning about kindness. This will be the theme for the whole school next week. We will explore the difference between joking/banter, teasing and bullying. We will also consider how our actions online should be positive and link this to how one person in a group can make a change if something feels or is wrong.
Spelling
In your child’s reading record, there is a sticker with the words they are learning. We call these ‘red words’ and they are tricky or impossible to sound out using phonics. Some children have been given some challenging space-themed words to also learn. Thank you in advance for your support with this.
Love to Learn
Last week, we set a 2 week project. Please make a model or detailed diagram of something linked to our solar system. It could be a model of the whole solar system or just one of the planets. Be creative! Models are due in on 19th November or before.
In addition, the whole school has been invited to take part in this Christmas card competition:
🎄 Christmas Card Competition 🎄
Our school has been invited to take part in the annual Christmas card competition organised by our local MP, Polly Billington. Children are encouraged to create a festive design, and the winning cards will be printed and shared with businesses and organisations across East Thanet, as well as Members of Parliament in Westminster — spreading festive cheer far and wide!
Competition Categories
Under 7 years
Under 11 years
A template sheet has been provided. Children should complete their Christmas card design on the back of this sheet. Please note, all designs should be hand drawn on A4 paper with colouring pencils, crayons, felt-tips pens or paint. Please do not use glitter, sequins or digital artwork.
Consent
A permission form will be sent home to allow your child to take part. At no stage will full names be used; however, winners’ first names, ages and school names will be shared. Please complete and return the form along with your child’s artwork on the back of the consent form.
Deadline: entries must be returned to school by Wednesday 12th November.
We can’t wait to see the wonderful designs our children create! Thank you for your support — and good luck to all our young artists! 🎨✨
As the weather changes, our school field becomes muddy. Please can children bring in named wellies to change into at lunch time so that they can maximise their outdoor play time! They are welcome to bring in waterproof trousers and coat to protect their uniform. It is also a good idea to bring in a plastic bag for the boots to go in so the contents of their locker doesn't get muddy!
Our scooter park is open daily at lunchtime. Year 4 - Tuesdays, Year 5 - Thursdays, Year 6 - Wednesdays. To take part, children will need to bring their scooter from home, along with a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads.
