We have had another exciting week of diving headfirst into our lessons and enjoying our day-to-day school life!
English
In English this week, we have been learning how to write clear, imaginative, and well-structured instructions for making our very own Gruffalo Pie! To make our writing more effective, we focused on using commas in a list to separate ingredients and actions neatly — for example, Add the slimy slugs, crunchy beetles, and fluffy owl feathers into the bowl. We also learned how to use imperative verbs, sometimes called bossy verbs, to give direct and confident commands such as chop, mix, stir, and bake. To make our instructions flow smoothly and sound more professional, we included fronted adverbials like Carefully, After a few minutes, and before you start to show when or how each step should be done. Everyone enjoyed using their creativity to imagine weird and wonderful ingredients inspired by the Gruffalo story, while also practising important grammar skills. By the end of the week, our classrooms were filled with detailed recipes, colourful illustrations, and plenty of gruffalicious ideas!
Our daily phonics sessions continue to play an important role in developing the children’s reading and writing skills. This week, we have been using Fred Fingers to sound out and spell words, especially trickier ones with more sounds. We’ve also spent time blending sounds to read unfamiliar words more fluently and practising our Red Words – these are words that don’t follow regular phonetic rules and need to be remembered by sight, such as “said,” “because,” and “come.”
The children have also been writing sentences independently, working hard to remember their finger spaces, capital letters, and full stops. They are making fantastic progress in becoming more independent and confident writers. If you have a few minutes at home, going over Red Words or encouraging your child to sound out words using their Fred Fingers can make a big difference. Even a short practice each day helps reinforce what we’re doing in school.

Reading
Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child. This will be for the full 15 minutes, and we kindly ask that children are not taken home early during this time.
Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult.
The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning.
Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programme and will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online.

Please ensure reading folders are placed in the trays each morning so that we can read with your child and update their books when needed.
Chilton Heroes Reading Certificate – Each week, one child per class will be recognised for their fantastic reading in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
In Maths this week, we have been learning how to use sharing circles to help us solve division questions. We practised sharing different numbers equally into groups to find out how many were in each one. For example, when solving 12 ÷ 3, we drew three circles and shared twelve counters between them until each circle had the same amount. This helped us clearly see how division is all about sharing equally. Using sharing circles made the process much easier to understand and more enjoyable, as we could use practical equipment and drawings to check our answers. We worked carefully to make sure every group was equal, and by the end of the week, we felt much more confident with division!

PSHE
In PSHE this week, we have been focusing on the importance of kindness, as it was World Kindness Day. We talked about what kindness means and how even small acts—like giving someone a compliment, helping a friend, or smiling at others—can make a big difference. We shared examples of times when someone had been kind to us and how it made us feel, realising that kindness can spread and make our classroom a happier place. We also thought about ways we can show kindness every day, both in school and at home. It was a lovely reminder that being kind costs nothing but means everything!
Home learning
This week to solidify our learning in Maths we would like you to share items around your house. Make sure to write you division number sentence!
