One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 5.12.25

What a wonderful week we have had!

RWI

We have been continuing our small group learning, focusing on addressing any gaps in Set 1 sounds. Some groups are now ready to move on to learning their Set 2 sounds.

Set 2 sounds are known as “special friends,” which consist of two or more letters that combine to create one sound. It is crucial for children to recognise these special friends when reading, as this recognition significantly enhances their reading skills.

We encourage you to support your child’s reading by engaging with the texts they bring home. This practice will reinforce their learning and help them become more confident readers. Additionally, some children may have received a sticker indicating any Set 1 sound gaps they still need to work on.

Maths

This week, we have been learning about length and height. We have been learning to compare the length of objects using words such as shorter, longer, shortest and tallest. We have also been comparing height by using the vocabulary of taller, shorter, tallest and shortest. At the end of the week, we started to learn about ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd….) through the song The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Next week, we will be learning about ABC repeating patterns (e.g. red, blue, yellow, red, blue, yellow…). Children will learn to identify the pattern, continue the pattern, make their own ABC repeating patterns and spot an error in a repeating pattern.

Thematic

At the beginning of the week, we explored emergency vehicles. We learned about police cars, lifeboats, fire engines, ambulances and air rescue helicopters. We looked at the special features each has and when they would be used. We also learned about the jobs associated with these emergency vehicles.

We also designed and made our own emergency vehicle. We worked in small groups to do this, making sure that we included the special features associated with the emergency vehicle. We learned how to attach paper and card to our models in different ways.

To celebrate the end of our learning about transport, we had a visit from local firefighters and enjoyed a look around the fire engine! This was so much fun!
