Weekly News 30.1.26
Here is what we have been up this week…
Maths
In maths this week, we have been learning to divide. We have been practising using short division (the bus stop method) to divide 2 and 3 digit numbers. We then used this method to help us solve 2 step word problems involving division e.g.
Mrs Cousins has 96 rubbers. She shares them equally between 6 tables. The Mrs Jewell gives each table, 15 more rubbers. How many rubbers does each table have then?
Next week, we will be learning to add and subtract fractions, solve problems involving fractions and, of course, having great number fun all day on Friday when it is Number Day at school.
English
In English this week we have started to read a new text called ‘Pebble in my Pocket: A History of Earth’ by Meredith Hooper. Using this text, we are learning how to write a non-chronological report. We began by looking at what a good non-chronological report should look like and identified the features used. We learnt how to use technical vocabulary, how to maintain past tense throughout, and how to include complex sentences and compound sentences in a non-chronological report.
Next week we will continue reading ‘Pebble in my Pocket’ and learn some more skills needed for a non-chronological report; labelled diagrams and pictures with captions, writing statements, exclamation sentences and questions, and using commas in lists. The children will then start their showpiece, which will be a non-chronological report about the Ancient Egyptians.
Thematic
This week, we have continued our geography learning in our themed unit called ‘Cracking the Earth’s Core’. We have continued our study of Italy and the UK. We have learnt about the 8 points of a compass and used these to write statements about places in Italy e.g. North of Rome is Perugia, south-east of Mt Calvo is Mt Vesuvius. We have located Italy and the UK on a map of Europe along with other countries such as France, Spain, Germany and Poland. On a map of the world, we labelled the equator, lines of Capricorn and Cancer and the Greenwich Meridian line. We also located and labelled the 7 continents. In our last lesson, the children learnt how to use 4-figure grid references to describe where locations are on a map.
Next week, will be our Design and Technology week and we will be learning about frame and shell structures.

Spellings to learn this week for a test on Thursday 5th February are:
league, plague, rogue, vague, fatigue, tongue, catalogue, dialogue, minute, natural, naughty
Challenge word: synagogue
Love to Learn
For this week’s home learning task please pick 5 of the division calculations below and calculate the answers using the bus top method. Of course, for an added challenge you can try and solve of of the calculations!
96 ÷ 6 = 68 ÷ 4 = 72 ÷ 3 = 96 ÷ 3 = 855 ÷ 3 = 685 ÷ 5 =
Challenge questions (slightly tricker to solve): 130 ÷ 5 = 288 ÷ 6 = 153 ÷ 9 =
Please hand in this home learning task by Wednesday 4th February.
Please continue to read at home at least 4 times a week and play TTRS as often as possible.
