Weekly News 13.2.26
Year 4 have had an amazing term 3! Well done to all the children for all of their hard work and kindness this term. Here is what we have been up this week…
Maths
In maths this week, we have been learning to about fractions and decimals. We have been learning that the place value column after the ones column is the tenths column, then the hundredths column, and that there is a decimal point between the ones and the tenths. The children have learnt the decimal equivalents of tenths and hundredths e.g. 1/10 = 0.1, 2/10 = 0.2 etc and 7/100 = 0.07 and 53/100 = 0.53. We also learnt the decimal equivalents for ¼, ½ and ¾. These are important maths facts to learn so please practice with your child at home:
¼ = 0.25 ½ = 0.5 ¾ = 0.75
We also learnt to divide a whole number by 10 or 100, finding out that the answer will be a decimal number. E.g. 43 ÷ 10 = 4.3, 9 ÷10 = 0.9, 83 ÷ 100 = 0.83.
After half term, we will be interpreting bar graphs, pictograms, time graphs and learning to understand data presented in tables.
English
In English this week we finished reading ‘Pebble in my Pocket: A History of Earth’ by Meredith Hooper. We wrote poems based on this text this week learning to use figurative language in poetry. We have learnt to use similes, superlatives, metaphors and personification in our poems.
After half term we will begin reading our new text called ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ and our first writing genre will be learning to write diary entries using emotive language.
RE
In RE this week, we having being learning about Hindu worship. We found out about the Gods and Goddesses that Hindus worship and about how they worship both in the mandir and at home. The children learnt about puja and shrines.
In term 4, we will kick off the term learning with some PSHE learning, finding out about British Values and the 9 protected characteristics. We will then start our new themed learning unit called ‘Innovation Station’ where we will learn about the Golden Age of Islam and electricity.
Spellings
After half term we will be learning the spellings that were on the blog last week plus some more (see below). These spellings are all homophones and the children will need to know which spelling is used for which word.
hear, here, piece, peace, bored, board, berry, bury, medal, meddle, threw, through, plain, plane, bear, bare, aloud, allowed, tail, tale, hour, our, which, witch, main, mane, flower, flour, knot, knight, blew, whole, hole, waste, waist
Challenge words - weather, whether, father, farther, morning, mourning, aisle
Love to Learn
Your Love to Learn challenge for over the half term is to find out about an invention that interests you. Maybe you could find out who invented the telephone, the television, the computer, the internet, the train or car, or whatever you would like to find out about! You could write an information page or make a poster about what you find out.
Please hand in this home learning task by Wednesday 25th February.
Please continue to read at home at least 4 times a week and play TTRS as often as possible.

The Viking Speaker Competition
Dear Chilton Families,
It is that time of year again that we will be holding the Viking Speaker Competition. The Speaker competition is an annual competition across the Viking Academy Trust that helps to develop children's Oracy skills. The children are invited to create and present a speech on a given theme. Four children will be chosen to represent the school, competing against children from Ramsgate Arts and Upton to become the Viking Speaker winner for 2026.
This year the children are invited to ‘Pitch their passion’. The idea is the children choose something they are passionate about. This could be anything from Climate Change to Capybaras; it may be a hobby they have or just something they find interesting. They need to write a speech that inspires the audience to take an interest in their chosen passion. The speech can be no longer that 2 minutes and the children cannot use any props or slides to help them during their speech.
To help the children with this competition, please could you support your child across half term to decide which passion they have that they might wish to ‘pitch’ in their speech. They need to consider what makes their passion so intriguing and why others should also take an interest in it. They can begin to make some notes or even create a first draft of their speech. They will then continue to work on their speech during the first week back in school after half term.
Those children that wish to enter the competition will perform their speech to their class during the week beginning 2nd March. Each class will choose one representative. We will then hold the Chilton Speaker Final on Friday 13th March, where our four Chilton representatives will be chosen. These four children will take part in the Viking Speaker Final on Friday 27th March.
We look forward to learning all about what our children are passionate about.
