Weekly News –09.02.26
The final week of Term 3 has been a busy but exciting week. We learnt all about AI and how to be safe online as part of Internet Safety Day.
Maths
This week in maths we have been learning all about fractions, focusing on equivalent fractions as well as ordering and comparing them using our reasoning skills and mathematical vocabulary. We have worked hard to recognise when fractions are equal and decide which fractions are greater or smaller. As we begin Term 4, we will be developing our subtraction skills and applying our existing knowledge of number facts and place value to solve a range of problems with increasing confidence and accuracy
English
This week in English we have been learning how to write letters using formal language, focusing on structure, tone and choosing appropriate formal vocabulary. The children have practised organising their ideas clearly while maintaining a polite and formal tone throughout. Next term we will be communicating our opinions and ideas linked to The Speaker Competition, and we will also be developing our oracy skills so that we can clearly present and justify our thoughts to others.
Thematic
This week we have explored what different religious signs and symbols mean and why they are important to people of different faiths. It will be a thoughtful and interesting way to round off our learning this term. Next term we will begin our new topic, Revolutionary Romans. We will start the week with a PSHE day looking at the British Values.
Swimming
Next term, for PE Year 3 will be going swimming.
Children should come to school in PE kit for swimming on a Wednesday, with their swimwear and towel in a separate bag. Please note that children are required to wear a swimming hat for their lessons. We do have some spare swimming hats available, however if you already have one or are able to purchase one, we would be grateful. If goggles are worn, it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that they meet the British Safety Standard requirements. Government guidelines state that for health and safety reasons, earrings should be removed for swimming, so children should not wear earrings (even studs). Earrings will need to be removed before the school, as we can't help children take earrings out.
Just to make you aware, if your child is not swimming they will still be attending the swimming pool with their class.
Art Competition
NEW ART COMPETITON – DEADLINE 4th MARCH 2026
We would love to see children from Chilton entering the following art competition hosted by the Royal Academy of Arts. Families will be asked to submit their children’s artwork via the following link (you will need to register):
https://youngartists.royalacademy.org.uk/get-involved#artworks
ABOUT THE COMPETITON
Each student can submit one piece of artwork and there is no theme. When you enter, they will ask for an image of the artwork plus some information about the piece such as title, size, and some text written by the artist which can include why they created the work and what it means to them. Their panel of judges will see the artwork and the selected pieces will be shown in an online exhibition. Some of the artworks will also be shown at the Royal Academy of Arts.
Full details can be found on their website:

We are very excited to see your submissions!
Good Luck! From Mrs Barlow and Mrs Howard

The Viking Speaker Competition
Dear Chilton Families,
It is that time of year again that we will be holding the Viking Speaker Competition. The Speaker competition is an annual competition across the Viking Academy Trust that helps to develop children's Oracy skills. The children are invited to create and present a speech on a given theme. Four children will be chosen to represent the school, competing against children from Ramsgate Arts and Upton to become the Viking Speaker winner for 2026.
This year the children are invited to ‘Pitch their passion’. The idea is the children choose something they are passionate about. This could be anything from Climate Change to Capybaras; it may be a hobby they have or just something they find interesting. They need to write a speech that inspires the audience to take an interest in their chosen passion. The speech can be no longer that 2 minutes and the children cannot use any props or slides to help them during their speech.
To help the children with this competition, please could you support your child across half term to decide which passion they have that they might wish to ‘pitch’ in their speech. They need to consider what makes their passion so intriguing and why others should also take an interest in it. They can begin to make some notes or even create a first draft of their speech. They will then continue to work on their speech during the first week back in school after half term.
Those children that wish to enter the competition will perform their speech to their class during the week beginning 2nd March. Each class will choose one representative. We will then hold the Chilton Speaker Final on Friday 13th March, where our four Chilton representatives will be chosen. These four children will take part in the Viking Speaker Final on Friday 27th March.
We look forward to learning all about what our children are passionate about.
