One Childhood, One Chance

27.2.2026 Weekly News!

Welcome back! It’s been so great to be together again this week and what a week it has been! We kicked off the week by learning about our British Values and why we learn about them. We then focused on the 9 protected characteristics and how it is illegal to discriminate against anyone based on these characteristics. Later that day, we then learned about marriage and civil partnerships, with a focus on how someone must not be treated unfairly based on this part of their identity.

English

This week, we started by looking at a variety of Greek myths in a comic strip style. We focused on Pandora’s box and used this as inspiration to create our own comic strip of the myth. In our comic, we used succinct sentences to tell the story and also experimented with different shaped speech and thought bubbles for characterisation. We also spent time outside using our outdoor stage to re-enact the myth in groups.  During our afternoon lessons, we planned, drafted and then wrote our entries for the Viking Speaker Competition. The theme this year is ‘Pitch Your Passion’. We will vote for our class winner next week.

Next week, we will start to read our next class text: The Adventures of Odysseus. We will learn the back story of the main character. We will also continue to read other myths and generate a list of features most myths have. After this, we will learn about heroes and villains and design our own mythical creatures. Using our designs, we will then begin to plan and then draft a non-chronological report.

Maths

This week, we learned about thousandths and how this relates to other place value columns. We then returned to rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. For example, round 2143 to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. The answer would be 2140, 2100 and 2000. We also answered reasoning questions based on this to challenge our understanding. We ended the week by extending our rounding skills when rounding decimals to the nearest whole number.

Next week, we will be learning about money. We will refresh what we know about pounds and pence and also link this to decimals. Using ‘part part whole’ mental methods and also using formal written methods, we will be adding and subtracting amounts of money. We will also be solving addition and subtraction money problems, sometimes using the bar model approach.

Spelling

In your child’s reading record, there is a sticker with the words they are learning. We call these ‘red words’ and they are tricky or impossible to sound out using phonics. Some children have been given some challenging  words to also learn. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Love to Learn

This week, we would like you to log into MyOn and find the assignment set for you. Your challenge is to read one of the books in the assignment linked to Ancient Greek. Please read at least one of these books and then do the quiz on AR. If you'd like to show us what you have learned from the book, make a mind map in your home learning book and record it that way. You’ll find the link to MyOn on the AR part of the Chilton website.
