We have had another lovely week in Year 4 and even seen some sunshine! Here is what we have been up to...
Maths
In maths this week we have been learning about statistics. We have learnt to interpret data in tables, line graphs, bar graphs and pictograms. The children tackled sum and comparison questions including finding the difference between some of the sets of data.
Next week, we are learning about coordinates and translation.
English
In English we have started to read our new book called 'The Boy at the Back of the Class'. Our first writing genre this term is diary entries and this week we have learnt about the features of a good diary entry and learnt how to use emotive language in one. We wrote in role as if we were one of the characters from the story.
Next week, we will be continuing to learn how to write diary entries, learning to include complex sentences and fronted adverbials,
Thematic
We started our new themed learning unit this week called 'Innovation Station'. To kick off this unit we are learning some history and finding out about a period of time called the Golden Age of Islam. The children found out that the Islamic Golden Age began in 750CE and the centre of the empire was Bagdad in Iraq. At this time, Baghdad was one of the most advanced cities in the world and many important scientific, mathematical, medical and astrological discoveries and inventions were made, including algebra. The children made some incredible fact files about the Golden Age of Islam, using their skills learnt in English to create some excellent non-chronological reports. In our second lesson we learnt about one of the most creative men from the Islamic Golden Age called Ibn Al-Haythem. He was one of the first scientists to make important discoveries about optics and developed the camera obscura. After finding out about him, we made our own pinhole cameras. here we are making them...

NEW ART COMPETITION – DEADLINE 4th MARCH 2026
We would love to see children from Chilton entering the following art competition hosted by the Royal Academy of Arts. Families will be asked to submit their children’s artwork via the following link (you will need to register):
Each student can submit one piece of artwork and there is no theme. When you enter, they will ask for an image of the artwork plus some information about the piece such as title, size, and some text written by the artist which can include why they created the work and what it means to them. Their panel of judges will see the artwork and the selected pieces will be shown in an online exhibition. Some of the artworks will also be shown at the Royal Academy of Arts.
