This week in Year 2 has been full of excitement as we celebrated World Book Day! The children arrived at school dressed as their favourite book characters, and it was wonderful to see such a fantastic variety of costumes and stories being shared. Throughout the day, we spent time enjoying books together, talking about our favourite characters, and celebrating the joy of reading.

English
This week in English, the children became information writers as they created their own booklets about how frogs grow. We learnt about the life cycle of a frog and used this knowledge to write clear instructions explaining each stage. The children focused on using imperative verbs to give commands, helping their writing sound like proper instructions.
They worked hard to organise their ideas into simple information booklets, thinking carefully about the steps and the language they used. It was fantastic to see them using words such as watch, wait, observe, and place to clearly instruct the reader. The children were very proud of their finished booklets and enjoyed sharing their work with their classmates.

Reading
Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child. This will be for the full 15 minutes, and we kindly ask that children are not taken home early during this time.
Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult. The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning. Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programme and will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online.
Maths
In Maths this week, the children have been learning about the inverse relationship between multiplication and division. We explored how these two operations are linked and how one can help us check the other.
The children practised using multiplication facts to solve division problems and began to see how numbers in a multiplication sentence can be rearranged to create related division facts. They used practical resources, drawings, and number sentences to help them understand this relationship.
It has been great to see the children building confidence when solving problems and using their multiplication knowledge to help them work out division questions. They also enjoyed spotting the patterns between the different number sentences.

Thematic
In Thematic this week, the children have been learning about the life of Florence Nightingale. We explored a timeline of important events in her life and discussed why she is such a significant historical figure.
The children learnt about key moments from her childhood through to her work as a nurse, including how she helped to improve hospitals and care for soldiers. They enjoyed placing events in chronological order and talking about how her actions made a difference to people’s lives.
It was wonderful to see the children developing their understanding of the past and asking thoughtful questions about how life was different during the time of Crimean War.
Home Learning
This week as part of your home learning we would like you to reinforce your English learning by writing a set of instructions for how to play a game! Remember to include a ‘you will need section’.
Chilton Book Fayre
The Chilton Book Fayre will arrive on Monday 9th March and run until Friday 13th March outside the Year 5 classrooms. Children will come home with a World Book Day book voucher.
