Traditional celebrations to mark the start of the Lunar New Year were shared by little ones at Chilton primary in Ramsgate.
Reception class children welcomed the year of the Fire Horse - in Chinese culture, the horse symbolizes strength, speed, courage, loyalty, freedom and talent. Those born under this zodiac sign are often said to be brave, steady, upright, faithful and independent.
The pupils learned first-hand about the home traditions when a parent visited to explain more to them in personal detail.
Teacher Kirby Walker is Chilton’s Early Years Leader. She said: “Our classrooms were transformed with vibrant decorations as children learned about how the Lunar New Year is celebrated by families around the world.
“Through stories, food tasting, music and hands-on activities, the children explored traditions such as red and gold colours for good luck, festive animals of the lunar calendar, and the importance of spending time with family and friends.
“They also made Chinese paper lanterns and enjoyed taking part in a dragon dance.
“This was a memorable experience and a colourful reminder of the importance of learning about and celebrating different cultures together.”
Deputy Head of School Hannah Cheshire added: “It was lovely to see our young pupils so involved and eager to find out about the celebrations and what they mean.
“We actively encourage of children to explore the history, heritage and culture of other countries through thematic learning and by celebrating specific occasions, such as the Lunar New Year.”
