One Childhood, One Chance

13.3.2026 Weekly News!

Well done to Year 5 for another fun and focused week of school. A particular well done to Jane and Avie for being our Year 5 and 6 winners for the Viking Speaker Competition. They will now enter the final in 2 weeks' time. We are so proud of them and we wish them the best of luck for the final.

English

This week, we continued to read The Adventure of Odysseus and find out what happened next in the story. We also continued writing our non-chronological reports. Our focus was on using technical vocabulary to make us sound like an expert and inform the reader. We also learned how to use parenthesis in our paragraphs about our creature’s special power or backstory. Using contractions, second person and informal language, we then challenged ourselves to write an informal ‘fun fact’ for our non-chronological reports.

Next week, we will continue to read the Adventures of Odysseus. After being inspired by artists’ impression of Odysseus, we will then gather vocabulary, draft and write a final edit of a character description.

Maths

This week, we began by learning about our problem-solving type for this term: working backwards. We then returned to learning more about how to tell the time. We rehearsed telling the time to one-minute intervals and then also learned how to convert between different units of time. Using that knowledge of time conversions, we then solved problems.

Next week, we will be looking at plotting points using co-ordinates. Up until now, we have learned about the first quadrant. We will be now be learning about the other 3 quadrants. We will also be learning how to reflect shapes in all 4 quadrants.

Spelling

In your child’s reading record, there is a sticker with the words they are learning. We call these ‘red words’ and they are tricky or impossible to sound out using phonics. Some children have been given some challenging words to learn. Thank you in advance for your support with this. There will be a spelling test at the end of the term on these words.

Love to Learn

This week, we would like you to make a leaflet or poster about using parenthesis and also the punctuation to show this. Your audience is younger children so make sure your information is clear and informative.

Alongside this, we would like you to prepare a costume to wear for our Ancient Greece Day on Wednesday 25th March.
