One Childhood, One Chance

20.3.2026 Weekly News

Year 5 are in full swing with our Ancient Greek thematic lessons! From Greek architecture to Greek philosophers and from Greek myths and Greek theatre, we have fully immersed ourselves in everything Greek! Please do remember it is Ancient Greek day next week on Wednesday 25th March. We invite you to come to school in your Ancient Greek costumes.

English

This week, we continued to read the Adventures of Odysseus. After being inspired by artists’ impression of Odysseus, we then gathered vocabulary, drafted and wrote a final edit of a character description.  We learned the skills of figurative language (similes, metaphors and personification) and also added extra information by adding embedded relative clauses.

Next week, we will carry on reading the Adventures of Odysseus. We will also try to put ourselves into Odysseus’ shoes and begin to delve into his thoughts and feelings. We will learn how to write emotively, whilst writing in role as Odysseus and other characters.

Maths

This week, we looked at plotting points using co-ordinates. Previously, we had only learned about the first quadrant. This week, we learnt about the other 3 quadrants. We also learnt how to reflect shapes in all 4 quadrants by counting the distance from the mirror line and some of us showed that we could then give the co-ordinates of a point’s new position.

Next week, we will be learning how to measure angles on a straight line using a protractor. We will also be introduced to what a reflex angle is. Afte that, we will learn how to calculate (not measure) angles on a straight line, by knowing angles on a straight line add up to 1800.

Spelling

In your child’s reading record, there is a sticker with the words they are learning. We call these ‘red words’ and they are tricky or impossible to sound out using phonics. Some children have been given some challenging words to learn. Thank you in advance for your support with this. There will be a spelling test at the end of the term on these words.

Love to Learn

This week, we would like you to explore reflections in real life. This could be examples you find around your house, in artwork or even drawing your own.

Alongside this, we would like you to prepare a costume to wear for our Ancient Greece Day on Wednesday 25th March.
