Weekly News! 20.3.26
What a fabulous week we have had! Take a look at what we have been up to!
Wow Year 1 absolutely loved Forest school, what a lovely way to end the week!
Maths
This week in Maths we have learnt to divide by sharing and grouping. We started the week by sharing objects into groups. We talked about how equal means “the same,” and the children worked very carefully to make sure each group had the same number of items. We focused on working systematically—taking turns and making sure no group was missed out when sharing.
The children really enjoyed using real objects and sharing hoops to help them see how sharing works in a practical way. This hands-on approach helped build their understanding and confidence.
Next, we moved on to grouping. We looked at the first number to see how many arrays we needed then looked to see how many we would put into a group. Once we did this, we could see how many groups there were to find the answer. Year 1 were so amazing at this!
Here are some questions we had:
Next week we will be looking at fractions.
Each week, we will share a key maths fact. This week, we are learning:
Addition Facts:
-
4 + 0 = 4
-
0 + 4 = 4
Read, Write Inc. (RWI)
This week, the children have shown fantastic enthusiasm as we revisited previously taught sounds and continued to strengthen their phonics reading skills. It has been a joy to see their growing confidence and engagement in learning.
We have been focusing on several key areas, including recognising “special friends” — groups of letters that work together to make a single sound. The children are becoming increasingly confident at spotting these in words and using Fred Talk, blending, and segmenting to support their reading. They have also been practising reading green words and learning a range of red (tricky) words.
Alongside this, we have seen great progress in handwriting. The children are taking increasing care with letter formation, using capital letters appropriately, and remembering to add full stops to complete their sentences. Their handwriting is becoming clearer and more controlled each week, which is wonderful to see.
To support your child at home, you can help by spotting “special friends” in everyday words, blending sounds together to read full words, and encouraging regular practice for an extra boost. We are finding spotting chatty friends like; a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e and u-e a particular challenge, so any practise with spotting these would be great.
Reading at Home
-
Children will bring home two books each week:
-
RWI Home Book – should be read three times a week for fluency. Changed every Monday by an adult.
-
Book with coloured sticker – children can change independently, ideally in the morning.
-
-
Please ensure reading folders are placed in the trays at school.
-
Encourage your child to read at home and record it in their reading record.
-
Certificates are awarded weekly to celebrate reading achievements, and every 20 reads earns a special certificate!
If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher
Thematic
This week, we have been busy exploring both geography and history through lots of exciting activities!
In geography, we learnt that the United Kingdom is an island. We discovered the different seas that surround it and had great fun taking part in a range of activities. The children used clues to guess the names of the seas, labelled them on a map, and even wrote their own descriptions. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they began to understand more about the world around them. Take a look at our fantastic work!

In history, we continued learning about how we can use a range of sources to find out about the past and answer questions we might have. This week, we focused on the amazing Charles Darwin. The children learnt about his life, his journey on the HMS Beagle, and why he is so famous.
To help us understand, we carried out a fun experiment using tweezers as ‘beaks’! The children explored how birds need to adapt to their environment to pick up different types of food. It was a fantastic hands-on way to bring our learning to life.
