Welcome back to our Year 2 weekly blog! The children have been doing so well in all their learning. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm, confidence, and hard work across the week.
English
This week, we have continued exploring our exciting non-fiction book, Sharks! Sharks! Sharks!, and the children are becoming real shark experts! They have loved building on their knowledge and sharing even more fascinating facts, leading to lots of enthusiastic discussions in the classroom.
We have continued to develop our understanding of different sentence types used in non-fiction texts. The children have been confidently using exclamations as captions to show excitement, as well as writing their own questions as subheadings to organise their ideas and engage the reader. Alongside this, they have been working hard to write clear and informative statements, using all the amazing facts they have learnt about sharks. It has been wonderful to see their confidence and skills grow throughout the week!
Reading
Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child. This will be for the full 15 minutes, and we kindly ask that children are not taken home early during this time.
Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult. The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning. Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programme and will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online.
Maths
This week in maths, we have been focusing on length. The children have been busy measuring, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing different lengths, using both centimetres and metres. They have taken part in a range of practical activities to help deepen their understanding and apply their skills in meaningful ways.

We have also been working hard on tackling word problems involving length. The children have been learning to carefully read questions, identify key information, and decide which operation to use. They have shown great determination when solving these problems and have been developing their confidence in explaining their reasoning. It has been fantastic to see their problem-solving skills grow throughout the week!

Thematic
This week, we have been learning about animals and their basic needs. The children have been introduced to new vocabulary such as herbivore, omnivore, and carnivore, and have enjoyed discussing what different animals eat and how they survive.
We explored whether different animals would be able to live in our playground habitat, thinking carefully about what they would need to survive. The children also made thoughtful comparisons between the needs of humans and other animals, helping them to deepen their understanding.
In addition to this, we sorted a range of animals and objects into living, non-living, and dead. The children showed great understanding and were able to explain their ideas using the new vocabulary they have learned. It has been a fantastic week of scientific thinking and discussion!
Home Learning
This week it would be brilliant if you could show us your thematic understanding by creating your own animal needs poster for an animal of your choice. This animal can be one that exists already or one you have created. Remember to show how the animal will get it basic survival needs of foot, water, air and shelter.
