One Childhood, One Chance

27.3.2026 Weekly News!

This has been a week full of fun and giggles in Year 5! On Wednesday, we loved seeing you all arrive in your Ancient Greek costumes and we took part in an Olympics Games, tried Greek food and made Greek mythical creature masks. We also learned some fascinating science knowledge about how our bodies are going to change and why. On that day, we also talked about different types of relationships and how they are formed. Through lots of discussion, we explored what to do if a relationship made you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

English

This week, we carried on reading the Adventures of Odysseus. We also tried to put ourselves into Odysseus’ shoes and began to delve into his thoughts and feelings. We then learned how to write emotively, whilst writing in role as Odysseus and other characters.

Next week, we will hear the beginning of a myth and use our knowledge of myths to write our own ending. We will also finish reading to the end of our class text: The Adventures of Odysseus.

Maths

This week, we learned how to measure angles on a straight line using a protractor. After that, we learned how to draw angles with a protractor when we were given the angles. We also were introduce what a reflex angle is. Then, we learned how to calculate (not measure) angles on a straight line, by knowing angles on a straight line add up to 1800.

Next week, we will be learning how to use scaling to increase or decrease amounts of something or also use it for converting units of measure. These calculations will give us approximate conversions of measures such as money and imperial/metric measurements.

Spelling

In your child’s reading record, there is a sticker with the words they are learning. We call these ‘red words’ and they are tricky or impossible to sound out using phonics. Some children have been given some challenging words to learn. Thank you in advance for your support with this. There will be a spelling test at the end of the term on these words.

Love to Learn

This week, we would like you to look for examples of when a cam mechanism is used in real life, for example door locks and toys. Show us what you find!

Alongside this, please prepare for our trip on Monday to Pegwell. All children will need wear suitable non-uniform and also bring a rucksack with a water bottle and a snack.

There is also an additional task you might want to take part in and that is our Chilton Art Competition. Please see the image below for more details.
