Gods and Mortals from Ancient Greece at Chilton Primary

Costumed characters from Ancient Greece were spotted in and around Chilton Primary in Ramsgate.
The unusual gathering were children and teachers dressed as their favourites from the themed learning Gods and Mortals.
The roll call included everyone from Cyclops to Zeus, as pupils acted out their favourite Greek myths, tasted and rated Greek foods, and held an Ancient Greek Olympics.
As part of their topic work the Year 5 group discovered how government and democracy developed in the civilisation, learnt about Greek legends, which linked closed to their English text Odysseus, and they also studied Greek architecture and created their own clay pots.
Deputy Head of School Hannah Cheshire said: “This was a fascinating topic and the final day of activities with traditional wear and a range of activities was a fun climax to a brilliant term’s work that really engaged our children and enriched their knowledge.”
The starting point for the pupils’ journey was learning where Ancient Greece was located in the Mediterranean from the 8th century BCE and how far it stretched compared to today’s map.
Heritage and culture were common themes all term including inventions, belief systems and the afterlife, the worship of gods and goddesses such as Athena and Poseidon, literature, fables and poems such as the epic poems of Homer (Iliad and Odyssey) and the fables of Aesop.
A range of architectural structures such as the Parthenon and the Temple of Olympian were considered and pupils designed their own structure
Education and intellectual pursuits of the time focussed on philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle and how they made important contributions to philosophy and critical thinking.
Head of School Alex McAuley added: “Theme days are important parts of topic learning. It engages our children and encourages them to feel a part of the time and place they are investigating. It is an exciting added dimension to reinforce and celebrate their learning.”
Chilton Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with partner schools Upton Juniors in Broadstairs and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
