One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 2/4/26

As we enter our final week before the Easter break, Year 2 is filled with excitement as we reflect on a term of hard work, celebrate our achievements, and enjoy some special Easter-themed activities together.

English

This week, we continued our learning by using the notes we had taken from How Bees Make Honey to begin constructing our own informative leaflets about bees. The children worked hard to select the most important information and present it in a clear and engaging way.

We thought carefully about the key skills we have been practising over the past few weeks. In particular, the children used questions as subheadings to organise their ideas and guide the reader through each section, just like in real non-fiction texts. They also focused on grouping information into paragraphs, making sure each section had a clear purpose.

Alongside this, the children worked on using conjunctions such as and, because and so to join their ideas and improve the flow of their sentences. They also made a great effort to include more scientific and topic-specific vocabulary to make their writing sound more formal and informative.

It has been fantastic to see the children applying so many of the skills they have learnt independently. We are incredibly proud of their effort and enthusiasm, and we are looking forward to seeing their finished leaflets come together!

Reading

Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child. This will be for the full 15 minutes, and we kindly ask that children are not taken home early during this time. Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult. The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning. Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programme and will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online. Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any problems with this!

Maths

In Maths, we have continued to develop our understanding of fractions, focusing on finding equivalent fractions and applying this knowledge to a range of word problems and real-life scenarios. The children have been working hard to recognise how fractions can be represented in different ways and to explain their reasoning clearly. It has been great to see them growing in confidence when solving problems and using their fraction skills in a variety of contexts.

RE

This week in RE, we have been learning about Judaism and exploring the story of Moses. The children listened carefully to the story and discussed its importance, thinking about what it teaches us about faith, courage and leadership.

To deepen their understanding, the children took part in a range of engaging activities, including acting out key parts of the story. This helped them to bring the events to life and better understand the emotions and challenges faced by the characters. They worked collaboratively, using expression and teamwork to retell the story in their own words.

The children also enjoyed sharing their ideas during class discussions, making thoughtful links to our wider learning and reflecting on the messages within the story. It has been lovely to see their confidence grow as they express their opinions and develop a deeper understanding of different beliefs and traditions.
