One Childhood, One Chance

Chilton’s Own Toy Story

The development of toys over the centuries has captivated young creatives at Chilton Primary in Ramsgate.

Finding out about popular playthings of the past has included discussing the types of materials used, how they were designed and how easy they were to enjoy playing with.

To kickstart the topic called the Toymaker, children from Year 1 were enthralled by a special visit from the Classroom Adventures team whose workshop linked in with the history and design technology learning this term.

Pupils were fascinated by a hands-on toy museum where they could find out about exhibits from the past as well as from other cultures – and get the chance to play with them as well.

The group were also challenged to make their own toys and were taught how to use tools such as hammers to designed their own creation with moving parts.

Deputy Head of School Hannah Cheshire said: “The children were entranced by the workshop. Starting our units of learning with such exciting opportunities really does inspire and enthuse pupils for their upcoming learning.”

As part of the project, they will also consider toys played with by members of their family over the generations and discuss how they changed through time.

Classroom Adventures state: “The focus on individual making helps children develop concentration, fine motor skills and confidence, while experiencing the satisfaction of completing a physical object themselves.”
