This term is flying by already and we have a short but busy week ahead of us. Let’s take a look at our learning this week.
English
This week, we have been learning about the harsh realities of Victorian workhouses and how they were often considered to be worse than prisons. The children explored how to describe settings effectively, using prepositional phrases and ensuring a varied range of sentence openings to keep their writing engaging.
Next week, we will begin planning and writing an extended narrative, with a focus on how to capture the reader’s attention through different styles of story openings.
Maths
In Maths this week, we have revisited division using the bus stop method. Previously, we worked with remainders when numbers did not divide neatly, but this week we extended this skill by learning how to express answers as decimals instead. This has helped deepen the children’s understanding of division and place value.
Thematic
In Thematic learning this week, we continued exploring the history of Ramsgate, focusing on its role during the World Wars. We learnt that Ramsgate was once named the most bombed seaside town, and that residents would sometimes see Zeppelins approaching overhead. We also discovered how the Ramsgate Tunnels were used to keep people safe — including during a period in the Second World War when 500 bombs were dropped on the town in just five minutes.
Next week, we will be learning about the history and features of Ramsgate’s coastline in preparation for our trip on Friday.
Love to Learn
Since we have been learning about the history of Ramsgate, we would like you to find out more about how the town has changed in recent years. You could carry out some research online, but it would also be fantastic to speak to people you know who have lived in Ramsgate for a long time and ask them what changes they have noticed.
Feel free to present your findings in any way you choose!
Messages
The easter love to learn was to prepare a short presentation about what makes you, you. The children will be presenting these to their learning partner next Wednesday so, if you didn’t get it done, have a think about what makes you, you.
On Friday, we have our trip to the Ramsgate harbour as part of our 'Tides of Change topic'.
The children will be in PE kit as it is PE in the afternoon but please make sure they have warm options as we are still getting quite chilly winds. Fully covered legs and a coat are recommended, perhaps a hat for protection from the sun. Please also ensure there is a snack and water bottle in their bag as we will not be returning to school until lunch time.
