One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 1.5.26

Wow! We have had a super week in Year 2! One of our highlights was the talent show. The children showed so much courage when performing and it really blew us away! We also loved talking together about what made them feel proud of themselves. It was lovely to see their confidence grow and to celebrate each other.

English

This week, we have continued exploring Emily Brown and the Thing, with a particular focus on understanding the characters’ thoughts and feelings.

The children worked collaboratively to generate thoughtful questions they would like to ask the characters. We then took part in an exciting hot seating activity, where some children stepped into role as Emily Brown or the Thing. Their responses were incredibly reflective and really demonstrated a deep understanding of the characters and their emotions.

We used this learning to support our writing, where the children have been developing their skills in writing in the first person. They have been focusing on using past tense verbs and writing from a clear point of view.

To showcase their learning, the children produced some fantastic diary entries. We were so impressed with how they captured the characters’ feelings and experiences in their writing. Well done, Year 2!

Reading

Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child. This will be for the full 15 minutes, and we kindly ask that children are not taken home early during this time. Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult. The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning. Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programme and will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online.

Maths

This week in maths, we have been learning about position and direction.

We began by exploring ordinal numbers and used these to order and arrange objects into patterns. The children showed great understanding when identifying positions such as first, second and third…

We then moved on to using directional language, including north, east, south and west. The children enjoyed practising giving and following directions, developing their confidence with these key terms.

Later in the week, we focused on turns, learning about clockwise and anticlockwise movements, as well as quarter turns. We even challenged ourselves with three-quarter turns and the children rose to this brilliantly!

To bring all of this learning together, the children created their own treasure maps and practised giving clear instructions for others to follow. We were amazed by their ability to direct and guide each other so confidently. We are so proud of their fantastic teamwork!

Next week, we will be moving on to measurement, with a focus on mass.

Thematic

This week, we have continued developing our scientific skills as part of our Passion for Fashion topic.

The children have been exploring the properties of different materials and carried out a fair test to investigate which fabric is the stretchiest. We have loved watching them work carefully to ensure their test was fair, making thoughtful observations and discussing their results using scientific vocabulary.

We then challenged ourselves to think about which fabrics would be most suitable for different purposes. The children showed great understanding when explaining their choices and linking these to the properties of each material.

Next week, we will be moving on to Design and Technology, where we will begin exploring different ways of joining materials.

Home Learning

In Maths this week we will be measuring mass! To support this, we would love the children to measure some items around the house. The children can present their findings in any way they like and may even put them in weight order for an extra challenge!

Be creative and have fun!

Red words of the week: parents, past, pass, people, plant.

Home Learning
This week, we would love the children to continue their science learning at home by becoming designers and engineers!

Your challenge is to design a climbing frame for our school. Think carefully about the materials you would use (for example: metal, wood, plastic, rope) and label your design. For each material, explain why its properties make it suitable.

You can draw and label your design and even add extra details if you wish.

Be as creative and have fun!

Red words of the week

move, Mr, Mrs, old, only.
